Answer: i found this info in encyclopedias i have. red pandas live in eastern nepal, southern china, western china, western laos, and small bits of other countries northwest of china. they live in regular temperate forests, with bamboo, they live in tropical highland, and temperate bamboo forests. and although they are not totally endangered, their area in somewhat or completely poluted.

I need some good information to put in an article about red pandas. In the article I talk about some programs being run to help red pandas, but I need some info to back up why red pandas need to be conserved.

Red pandas are primarily endangered due to habitat loss caused by deforestation for timber, fuel, and agricultural use. It is estimated that fewer than 2,500 remain in the wild.

WCS Conservation Efforts
Dr. George Schaller began working for WCS in China’s Sichuan province in the early 1980s to study giant pandas. Some of that early work also included research on red pandas. Today, WCS continues to work in China, and runs education programs for schools in four provinces, including Sichuan. In Lao PDR, WCS is engaged in research, site-based conservation, and empowering local people to manage their natural resources. WCS is currently monitoring wildlife and threat indicators in the Nam Ha National Protected Area in Lao PDR to measure the success of those conservation programs. In 1993, WCS became the first international conservation non-governmental organization to start a program in Myanmar to increase the area of parks and reserves.

The loss of the red panda, and indeed loss of much, much biodiversity on our planet has negative consequences overall in direct and indirect ways in terms of how fertile land is or climate and so on. How could the loss of biodiversity change the climate is more indirect as many trees in rainforests are chopped the rate of absorption of CO2 diminishes, and so on.

It is not really the loss of one individual species that kills us but the cumulative affect of losing numerous species.

I have this assignment that I have to do aboit endangered animals. I chose the red panda. Theres a question that i have to answer and it says Explain why you decided to study this species. Obviously because its easier then the other animals. But i cant write that down, what should i write?

Answer: Red pandas are great if for no other reason than that they show the link between pandas and raccoons and ringtails. They are a mysterious creature, that stays secluded from view most of them time, and managing to hide amidst green leaves even while being bright red is impressive.

How much space, or territory does the red panda need? Please, I really really need to know. Preferably by Friday, but anything before Tuesday works for me. Also, if you know about the Red Panda food web that would be great!

Answer: It's isn't that they need a lot of 'ground' territory, but they need trees. They are not very large, but could probably live in a smaller area as long as there were plenty of trees for them to climb.
They aren't very active in the day, but at night they can be pretty active. However, the activity amount (and therefore the area needed) varies with each animal b/c they are all different.
Its diet consists of about two-thirds bamboo, but they also eat berries, fruit, mushrooms, roots, acorns, lichen, grasses, and they are known to supplement their diet with young birds, fish, eggs, small rodents, and insects on occasion. In captivity, however, they will readily eat meat.

Answer: I have a sneaking suspicion that this animal was just given the name without an actual genus or species definition, as there are no close relatives to it. All the resources I've looked at just discuss the interesting taxonomy: it's relation to Mustelids/Procyonids, it's past (and incorrect) relationship with Giant Pandas and their convergent evolution based on being bamboo eaters, and the evolutionary history through the fossil record.

You will have to look at something much more specific, an actual taxonomic text to find out if there is such a thing. Your best bet will be to go to the library and talk to a librarian.

Is a red panda really red?

Answer: Red pandas have reddish fur. They are also smaller, so they are called lesser pandas. The black and white panda is called the giant panda. The giant panda has a stumpy tail, like the other bears to which they are closely related. The giant panda occupies a position at the base of the bear family tree, so they are a sort of primitive bear, with lots of modifications on the bear body plan to allow them to specialize on bamboo.

The lesser panda has a tail, and it looks more like a raccoon than a bear. The lesser panda is more closely related to raccoons, weasels and skunks than to the giant panda. The giant panda and the bears are more closely related to seals and sea lions than they are to the weasels, skunks, and lesser panda. It was once thought that the lesser and giant pandas are each other's closest relatives, but it turns out that they are only convergently similar because they both specialize on eating bamboo. The lesser panda is able to digest bamboo more efficiently than the giant panda, so it is more active and and it spends less time eating and sleeping.
