Is there any kind of hope for what used to be South Africa?

Since the establishment of the so-called Rainbow Nation in 1994, with the election of the terrorist, Nelson Mandela, South Africa has descended into barbarism and chaos.
Rape, rape of infants, murder, car-jacking and corruption are the normal way of life, with South Africa having some of the highest crime stats in the world.
The populations way of dealing with this is to live in denial and say well, it happens all over the world.
AIDS is out of control, and a witchdoctor is the national health minister.
The infrastructure is crumbling and Johannesburg has become a war-zone/ghost town.
Apartheid has been reinstituted, this time favoring blacks, and the president is a drunk that believes that HIV is not the genesis of AIDS.

Answer: They say that you must never give up and hope for the best but it's difficult to have any hope in this country. Not when you have the ANC as the ruling party and Thabo Mbeki as president. We can't even turn to the police for any help. A man was attacked last week in the city Pretoria. He was sitting in his car when three men appeared out of nowhere. The one had a knife and started to attack the man through the half open window. They knew he had R2000.00 cash on him. A black cop was standing just a few metres away, so the guy called for help but the cop did nothing. He just stood there and watch. Only after they took of with his money, the cop walked up to him. So what does that tell you? They are working together. I can also name a few more incidents where white women were assaulted by corrupted cops. They enjoy every single moment of it. President Thabo Mbeki gave his yearly speech last week and he didn't give us any hope about the crime in this country. He stood there with no emotion on his face. He didn't even say that he feels sorry for all the crime victims and we all know that they don't want to do anything about the crime and we know that FNB was being blackmailed or threatened. Now AfriForum is trying to do something. They issued a court order to take the government to court, so that they can realise that crime must be on top of their list. Dunno if it's going to work. Let's hope for the best. O and another shocking incident that happened two weeks ago. A guy was working after hours and was about to close when three men came out of nowhere. They then asked him for money and he told them that he had no money with him. They then throw gasoline all over him and set him on fire with matches. He died a day later. They don't just take off with your belongings anymore. They torture or shoot you dead. They are getting more cruel and barbarous by the day.

What do the Kiwi supporters think of the Rugby movie Invictus?

In the 95 rugby world cup final the kiwis said they had food poisoning which cost them the game and blamed South African agents for it. I have not seen this movie yet and would like to know if any kiwis have seen it and what they think of it cause this movie supposedly tells the story of how Mandela inspired the Springboks on to victory.

Answer: The thing to remember is that the movie is not about rugby -- it is about Nelson Mandela, and the fact that chose to embrace rather than attack the Afrikaner population after he took power. The actor who plays Pienaar`s father has a telling line early in the film; when he says with real fear, `look at Zimbabwe`, which probably rings even more today than it did in 1995.

Rugby is just incidental to the plot -- it could have featured any other sport and worked just as well. Some incidents and characters are telescoped or merged, as they must be in any recounting of a historic event in the context of a film. The Matt Damon character is obviously a composite of Pinenaar and Andre Markgraaff -- something which was absolutely essential in a film context, given the real life relationship of the two. People who quibble about such things are being either deliberately obtuse, or are too dumb to get the point anyway.

On the alleged food poisoning incident -- it isn't mentioned in the film, isn't really relevant, and would merely distract the viewer from the main point. I don't generally buy conspiracy theories anyway. There is a lot of merit to the old saying about three people being able to keep a secret -- if two are dead! More likely some gastro-intestinal bug got loose among the squad at a very unfortunate time.

Edit: Dan -- you are being disingenuous. Steyn says that he saw the players being sick and speculates about a waitress named `Suzie`. He does not state that he saw them being poisoned, nor does he produce any credible evidence that they were -- which is hardly surprising given that it was his job to prevent that sort of thing. Even if the players did receive something which made them sick (a point yet to be proven) it could well have been accidental -- catered food is notorious for its potential to make people sick.

And it would have helped had he spoken up at the time, rather than in as part of marketing a book he wrote years after the fact.

Why do some people remember extensive news coverage of Nelson Mandela dying in prison in the 1980s?

Answer: Imprisonment was very hard on his health. This is why he was released-the RSA government of the time didn't want to make him a martyr. Perhaps they thought he would die soon after his release. However he thrived on the outside and got his health back. Now he is 94, so he has all the typical health problems of a 94 year old.

Answer: My friend C.J., who is now dead. He committed suicide, but I always looked up to him. He worked hard under the sun every day of his life to support his daughter, Fallon. He was very honest, and he would keep a secret no matter what. I talked to him about everything in my life, and he took every little secret I told to his grave. I respect him so much for that, because the things I told him would make a nun cross herself. He respected everyone and donated so much money to people, churches, and charities. He's my second father in my mind, and I'll always look up to him.

Answer: Actually, Mandela is not now, nor has he ever been a member of the South African Communist Party. He often argued with those who said that any revolt against apartheid would have to be communist, and would strengthen the communists, that he WASN'T one and that his FAILURE, if it happened, would strengthen the communists.

And when he took power, Mandela bent over backwards to keep the wealthy owners of the mining and metals corporations in full charge of their property. Hardly "communist" behavior.

Mandela has been, however, on many occasions, in political coalitions with the SACP.

In fact, Joe Slovo, commander of "Umkhonto we Sizwe," the military arm of the ANC, was not only a member of the SACP but at one time was its General Secretary.

Oh, and he was white. AND Jewish.

However, as far as today's most popular communist, I'd have to say Che, although my personal favorite is Leon Trotsky, with Rosa Luxemburg a close runner-up.
