Post-Apartheid Fiction
Niq Mhlongo is one of the most high-spirited and irreverent new voices of South Africas post-apartheid literary scene. Name a famous person who does good in the world?
I have an interview where I have to act as a famous person who offers a lot to the World. Any ideas?
Answer: Alive or dead? If dead then definitely Princess Dianna or Mother Teresa.
For alive and dead (excluding the recipients in 2007, 2009, and probably other years) any recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize.
- Nelson Mandela
- The 14th Dalai Lama (that's the current one)
- Desmond Tutu
- Again, Mother Teresa
- Theodore Roosevelt
Unless of course by famous you mean rich celebrity, but their impact on the improvement of humanity as a whole is minuscule compared to what the people above have done and most everybody on this list (see sources). This is especially true if you consider impact to income ratio since most of the people on this list are NOT rich, some even very poor.

Is there any kind of hope for what used to be South Africa?
Since the establishment of the so-called Rainbow Nation in 1994, with the election of the terrorist, Nelson Mandela, South Africa has descended into barbarism and chaos.
Rape, rape of infants, murder, car-jacking and corruption are the normal way of life, with South Africa having some of the highest crime stats in the world.
The populations way of dealing with this is to live in denial and say well, it happens all over the world.
AIDS is out of control, and a witchdoctor is the national health minister.
The infrastructure is crumbling and Johannesburg has become a war-zone/ghost town.
Apartheid has been reinstituted, this time favoring blacks, and the president is a drunk that believes that HIV is not the genesis of AIDS.
Any hope?
mapompana - shooting 12 year olds, as opposed to raping 12 month olds?
Oh yes, and Yasser Arafat also won the Nobel Peace Prize.
Innocentias answer is indicative of the literacy level in South Africa today.
Thanks for answering, baby, I rest my case.
Answer: They say that you must never give up and hope for the best but it's difficult to have any hope in this country. Not when you have the ANC as the ruling party and Thabo Mbeki as president. We can't even turn to the police for any help. A man was attacked last week in the city Pretoria. He was sitting in his car when three men appeared out of nowhere. The one had a knife and started to attack the man through the half open window. They knew he had R2000.00 cash on him. A black cop was standing just a few metres away, so the guy called for help but the cop did nothing. He just stood there and watch. Only after they took of with his money, the cop walked up to him. So what does that tell you? They are working together. I can also name a few more incidents where white women were assaulted by corrupted cops. They enjoy every single moment of it. President Thabo Mbeki gave his yearly speech last week and he didn't give us any hope about the crime in this country. He stood there with no emotion on his face. He didn't even say that he feels sorry for all the crime victims and we all know that they don't want to do anything about the crime and we know that FNB was being blackmailed or threatened. Now AfriForum is trying to do something. They issued a court order to take the government to court, so that they can realise that crime must be on top of their list. Dunno if it's going to work. Let's hope for the best. O and another shocking incident that happened two weeks ago. A guy was working after hours and was about to close when three men came out of nowhere. They then asked him for money and he told them that he had no money with him. They then throw gasoline all over him and set him on fire with matches. He died a day later. They don't just take off with your belongings anymore. They torture or shoot you dead. They are getting more cruel and barbarous by the day.

Hollywoods Multifaceted Cause du Jour
IN 1938 a memo sent to Harry Oppenheimer, whose family founded the De Beers diamond cartel, outlined a bold new advertising strategy: Motion pictures seldom include scenes showing the selection or purchase of an engagement ring to a girl. It would be our plan to contact scenario writers and directors and arrange for such scenes. Ever since - By MARC SANTORA

What do the Kiwi supporters think of the Rugby movie Invictus?
In the 95 rugby world cup final the kiwis said they had food poisoning which cost them the game and blamed South African agents for it. I have not seen this movie yet and would like to know if any kiwis have seen it and what they think of it cause this movie supposedly tells the story of how Mandela inspired the Springboks on to victory.
Answer: The thing to remember is that the movie is not about rugby -- it is about Nelson Mandela, and the fact that chose to embrace rather than attack the Afrikaner population after he took power. The actor who plays Pienaar`s father has a telling line early in the film; when he says with real fear, `look at Zimbabwe`, which probably rings even more today than it did in 1995.
Rugby is just incidental to the plot -- it could have featured any other sport and worked just as well. Some incidents and characters are telescoped or merged, as they must be in any recounting of a historic event in the context of a film. The Matt Damon character is obviously a composite of Pinenaar and Andre Markgraaff -- something which was absolutely essential in a film context, given the real life relationship of the two. People who quibble about such things are being either deliberately obtuse, or are too dumb to get the point anyway.
On the alleged food poisoning incident -- it isn't mentioned in the film, isn't really relevant, and would merely distract the viewer from the main point. I don't generally buy conspiracy theories anyway. There is a lot of merit to the old saying about three people being able to keep a secret -- if two are dead! More likely some gastro-intestinal bug got loose among the squad at a very unfortunate time.
Edit: Dan -- you are being disingenuous. Steyn says that he saw the players being sick and speculates about a waitress named `Suzie`. He does not state that he saw them being poisoned, nor does he produce any credible evidence that they were -- which is hardly surprising given that it was his job to prevent that sort of thing. Even if the players did receive something which made them sick (a point yet to be proven) it could well have been accidental -- catered food is notorious for its potential to make people sick.
And it would have helped had he spoken up at the time, rather than in as part of marketing a book he wrote years after the fact.

The Older-And-Wiser Hypothesis
In 1950, the psychoanalyst Erik H. Erikson, in a famous treatise on the phases of life development, identified wisdom as a likely, but not inevitable, byproduct of growing older. Wisdom arose, he suggested, during the eighth and final stage of psychosocial development, which he described as ego integrity versus despair. If an individual had - Stephen S Hall article on study of wisdom; says it is difficult to actually define wisdom; says it is founded upon knowledge but shaped by uncertainty; says action is important, but so is inaction; says emotion is central to wisdom, but detachment is essential; says attributes sound fuzzy and vague; notes paradox at center of study of wisdom, but holds researchers are attracted by exercise of defining it and its integration with aging; drawings; graphs (L) - Stephen S. Why do some people remember extensive news coverage of Nelson Mandela dying in prison in the 1980s?
Apparently its not just "I thought I heard he was dead". People actually report detailed memories of memorials for him, etc., from the 1980s. http://mandelaeffect.com/nelson-mandela-died-in-prison What could account for this? Could there really have been some ripple between universes?
Answer: Imprisonment was very hard on his health. This is why he was released-the RSA government of the time didn't want to make him a martyr. Perhaps they thought he would die soon after his release. However he thrived on the outside and got his health back. Now he is 94, so he has all the typical health problems of a 94 year old.

CHE GUEVARA:
- Worked in a Leper colony and treated lepers
- Was instrumental in teaching over 900,000 Cubans to read
- Tended to thousands of sick campesinos
- Helped construct dozens of schools throughout Cuba
- Removed the Mafia and dictatorship of Batista from Cuba which had killed 20,000 Cubans and tortured thousands more
- Desegregated the schools in Cuba before they were in the Southern US
- Called out South Africa’s Apartheid in 1964, 30 years before the West!
- Denounced the racism and KKK in America
- Warned of the dangers of the IMF, 3 decades before most of the developing world realized they had been scammed into debt slavery
- Left a bourgeoisie comfortable life of the upper class, a potential well compensated career as a medical doctor, and a high regarded governmental position, each time to slog through the jungle and fight guerrilla wars against impenetrable odds! ... In fact, near the end it took 1,800 rangers to bring down his 25 men.
Che’s “CRIMES” were:
~ Stopping American companies from owning 70 % of the arable land in Cuba

~ Fighting white mercenaries in the African Congo with an all black army
~ Speaking out against US and eventually USSR Imperialism while demanding that the poor of the world be allowed to live a life of dignity

How come Nelson Mandela wont speak out against the South African Farmer murders.?
Racial attacks on White Farmers has left 3,000 dead and counting.
Answer: Murdering white Christians seems to be allowed in this wicked world. I am sure they are not accustomed to fruitful crops and good harvests in Nelson Mandela's land and this is what the white Christian farmers offered. The Islamic Muslims could not stand for productivity. Allah doesn't allow productivity, only destruction. The God of Christianity allows for abundance, hope, love, charity and especially power and sound minds.
Not racial attacks, but down right evil attacks. The wicked have raised their ugly heads.

Adolescents, who is a predominant male figure that you look up to in your life?
…and why?
It can be anyone from your father to someone you don’t even know like Nelson Mandela.
Im asking this because Ive realized that I dont really have a person like that in my life. I have a lot of female role models, but not a male one. Hmm.
Answer: My friend C.J., who is now dead. He committed suicide, but I always looked up to him. He worked hard under the sun every day of his life to support his daughter, Fallon. He was very honest, and he would keep a secret no matter what. I talked to him about everything in my life, and he took every little secret I told to his grave. I respect him so much for that, because the things I told him would make a nun cross herself. He respected everyone and donated so much money to people, churches, and charities. He's my second father in my mind, and I'll always look up to him.

Who is the worlds most admired Communist today, living or dead?
Ill say member of the South African Communist Party and ANC leader Nelson Mandela. what about you? =)
@atheist Chuck: Communism never killed anyone, but people who used the good name of communism for political opportunity and power gain have killed people.
Answer: Actually, Mandela is not now, nor has he ever been a member of the South African Communist Party. He often argued with those who said that any revolt against apartheid would have to be communist, and would strengthen the communists, that he WASN'T one and that his FAILURE, if it happened, would strengthen the communists.
And when he took power, Mandela bent over backwards to keep the wealthy owners of the mining and metals corporations in full charge of their property. Hardly "communist" behavior.
Mandela has been, however, on many occasions, in political coalitions with the SACP.
In fact, Joe Slovo, commander of "Umkhonto we Sizwe," the military arm of the ANC, was not only a member of the SACP but at one time was its General Secretary.
Oh, and he was white. AND Jewish.
However, as far as today's most popular communist, I'd have to say Che, although my personal favorite is Leon Trotsky, with Rosa Luxemburg a close runner-up.
