Answer: During the 1950's there were revolts against white minority rule in South Africa which were put down swiftly and with a great deal of bloodshed.
Mandela and other activists (sometimes not even in concert in terms of being in direct communication with one another) turned to nonviolent means of changing their society. It is for this reason those who were sent to prison for 'crimes against the state' would engage in little more 'statement making' while in prison than going on food strikes.
Word about the injustices being wreaked upon the Black South African community was getting out through those who were often seeking teaching careers in other countries (usually Commonwealth nations, such as Canada). Members of the Black community had to leave South Africa if they wanted to have an education equal to that available to the whites in South Africa. While taking part in their learning process outside South Africa, they proved to be emissaries in their own right, speaking about the wrongs taking place back at home.
Mandela was able to come to the top and lead all the various groups of Blacks into a position to finally demonstrate to the white minority government, once and for all things would change and it would be better for a peaceful change than for the country to return to the difficulties encountered in South Africa in the 1950's and prior.

For an oral presentation Im going to compare Hitler and Nelson Mandela and try to convince the listeners that Nelson Mandela had good and effective leadership qualities and Hitler had some effective leadership qualities but not enough which made him an ineffective leader.

Answer: Well,we start here with a faulty premise,since Mandela was not a great leader.He was a good figurehead to use as a symbol in order to end the Apartheid system in S. Africa,but nothing more. However since the end of Apartheid,S Africa has been on essentially a slow downward spiral.And Nelson Mandela's ideals and ideas,which have been continued by subsequent Presidents of S Africa,are undoubtedly part of the reason for that downward slide. As it is now,S. Africa has the 10th highest Crime rate of any Country on Earth,they have the 2nd highest murder rate on Earth,and the highest Assault and Rape rates on the Planet. About 1/3 of their population has AIDS,and they seem to be barely effective at best in dealing with any of these problems. At the moment S. Africa still is holding together,but that's simply because many of their problems haven't come to the worst case yet.But if they continue on their current path,I would look for a near implosion of the country in the next two decades.

And all of that was set in motion at least in part,by Nelson Mandela and his Political Party which continues trying nothing but failed ideas over and over again.

George Galloway on Twitter condemned the now late Margaret Thatcher for once describing Nelson Mandela as a "terrorist".
My research suggests that he once directed the blowing up of a government installation.
However, I dont know if this counts as terrorism in a any reasonable or accepted sense, or whether he participated in any other acts which could be so described.

Answer: First, the ANC was never involved in the car bomb that killed over 19 civilians within South Africa, it was the MK (Spear of the Nation). Second, Nelson Mandela was incarcerated at Robben Island during the planning and actual car bomb attack; he was in no way connected to the incident. In addition, the liberation struggle in South Africa was different than anything we have experienced in America. The apartheid government had no representations for African rights and were responsible for the killing of hundreds of Africans, massacres like Sharpeville are always overlooked. Nelson Mandela was never a terrorist and still isn't, but the battle against an apartheid government sometimes requires leaving a non-protest method of liberation.

We consider terrorist today as being radical and unjustified acts against society. It is not wise to give anyone this label, especially if they were a part of a greater movement: the liberation of South Africa against an apartheid political and economical system.

Answer: I don't think Nelson Mandela studied the subject. However, growing up in South Africa, he probably felt troubled by the inequality, thus he took it upon himself to do something about it. Starting out as an activist, he was imprisoned for his efforts but upon release he realized that lawmakers like the office of the presidency are ones who really possessed the power to "make it happen". Therefore he raised his own campaign like any other aspiring president to be.

"Invictus" the movie is a biography and historically correct production and could considered a study of some sort since they would have probably needed to do some research to put it together

What are some risks that Nelson Mandela took for the sake of south Africa?

I have to make a chart for the strengths of Nelson Mandela and i was wondering if any of you guys could help.

Answer: Mandela was the terrorist leader of a terrorist organisation, the ANC (African National Congress) which was responsible for many thousands of, mostly black, deaths.

As recently as this month the names of Nelson Mandela and most of the ANC remained on the US government's terrorist watch list along with al-Qaeda, Hezbollah and the Tamil Tigers.

Mandela does not seek to hide his past, in his autobiography "the long walk to Freedom" he casually admits "signing off" the 1983 Church Street bombing carried out by the ANC and killing 19 innocent people whilst injuring another 200.

Now, after just 14 years of rule by Mandela and his successor Mbeki, corruption is rife, the country is beset with power cuts and the infrastructure is crumbling.

Under Apartheid, blacks and whites went to separate hospitals but they received world class health care, whatever their colour, now the facilities are collapsing or non-existent.

Black children went to different schools than white children, but they received an education, something which is now a privileged luxury. When they grew up, their bosses may have been white, but they had jobs and a living wage.

EDIT: Starry eyed - there is no opinion in this - these are the facts. My family were called "k**fir lovers" by our white neighbours because we as kids used to play with black kids. Take your blinkers off and look what South Africa has become in the last 14 years - murder, crime, rape have increased, education has gone to the dogs, public hospitals are a disgrace, corruption within government departments, failing justice system, inner cities are being destroyed - the list goes on. Mandela is not perfect and he is not the saint the rest of the world thinks he is. He is a human being like the rest of us and he has had made mistakes.

Answer: So a criminal is a person that has committed a crime, right? This is a logical assumption that cannot be challenged. But do we know what a crime is?
1. Is there a logical assumption that can clarify this question? This would mean something like "crimes are things that criminals do" but for this to be true a criminal should be an ontological entity regardless of time and space.
2. Do we have an intuitive way of knowing what a crime is? Perhaps, since there are some human deeds that we intuitively consider wrong because of the harm they do to others like murder. Human rights are supposed to hold all those actions that seem to hinder the notion of human behavior. But you also commit a crime if you don't pay taxes or alimony. So...
3. Are some crimes non intuitive?
There are some actions committed by humans as citizens that are considered criminal not because they harm humanity but because they harm the State. So the State defines certain actions as criminal even when they could hinder notions that humans strive for, like liberty and the pursuit of happiness. So that is why "when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such government".
It follows that Mandela would have been a criminal under the laws of a fair State but not under a despotic State since such a State had no underlying right to impose its abusive laws.
So Mandela was a freedom fighter.

How is Nelson Mandela viewed by White South Africans? Is he respected or hated?

Given his recent hospitalization, I was just wondering what White South Africans views on Nelson Mandela are? I mean is he generally respected for the most part, or is he not well liked or even hated? I have heard there are some White South Africans who would like to see Apartheid return. So I just wanted to know if most Whites in South Africa respect Mandela for bringing the country together and helping end Apartheid, or is there still some resentment against him among White South Africans?

Answer: White South Africans still feel that they have that superiority over Nelson Mandela (Africa) after he and Winnie broke up.

Answer: Nelson Mandela is the father of our nation and a hero in many ways.

Back in the day when the rights of many South Africans were undermined by the ruling and repressive apartheid government, Nelson Mandela was one of many individuals that stood up against the regime. He was involved in various meetings and organizations that supported the liberation and equal treatment of blacks.
It was these things that eventually landed him up in prison for 27 years.
By that time in 1990, thanks to foreign political pressure and mass protests at home, Mandela was finally released, which led to a turn of events that eventually landed him up as the first democratic president of South Africa.

Mandela didn't pursue a vendetta against the previous government, despite their many atrocities against human rights, but instead embraced a tone of reconciliation and encouraged others to do the same. Some feared that the ANC (newly elected ruling party) would cause chaos and anarchy, but these fears were never founded. Just look at whats happening in Zimbabwe for an example!

Nelson Mandela maintained fair and free democratic elections in SA and somehow united a nation that was once divided from within. Indeed he was just one of many that fought for freedom in SA, but it was he that lead us there.

Answer: Although Mandela was a convicted bomber and advocate of terrorism, as a lawyer he was the only single man who all black groups would accept as leader. His persona lessened the chance of total civil war erupting. De Klerk was a reformer whose reforms alone would have been too slow for the black masses.

There is more to this than just the rugby story. Nelson Mandela gave a priceless gift to his country - all hues! - through his willingness to forgive. Placing the welfare of the entire population ahead of his personal reactions is not so simple to actually do. Because his treatment was very well known, his calls for a united South Africa that moves beyond all that history have allowed a path forward to exist.

In contrast, consider the role and functions fo Robert Mugabe in Zim, and how that has wounded that beautiful and tragic place.
