Oh . I'm sorry, you mean THAT Strawberry, Gooden and Dykstra?
The Strawberry who was charged with failing to pay child support, for soliciting, for cocaine possession, for violating house arrest (multiple times) and who was known as an incredible whiner while playing for the Mets?
And the Gooden who was suspended twice for cocaine abuse? Who was arrested for domestic abuse? Who also spent time in prison for violating parole (he showed up for a meeting with his parole officer while on coke), adn who has been linked to steroids in the Mitchell Report?
And do you mean the Dykstra who also was linked with steroids, who has been rumored to have had a clubhouse attendant place bets on Phillies games while he was playing for them. Who once crashed his car while driving drunk, injuring not only himself but teammate Darren Daulton as well? And the one who was such a low life scum that he defrauded his elderly mother out of over $13,000.

I wouldn't one any one of those three anywhere near my clubhouse. And especially not all of them at once.

Edit - for Jack T. Never once have I ever stated that I led a perfect life. Nor do I feel that I am being overly judgmental regarding these 3 gentleman. All of us do things that we aren't proud of. But if you live in the real world, you usually end up paying a price for your mistakes. I'm all for second chances, and letting people move on with their lives, but if I ran a bank, I wouldn't hire someone who had been convicted of bank robbery to work for me. And if I ran a school, I wouldn't hire a teacher who was a sex offender. (Not that I could - most states don't allow you to, but you see my point). There are all kinds of cases where poeple are not allowed to do certain things - try getting a commercial drivers license if you've had a DUI. Try getting a security job if you are a convicted felon.
Sorry, but I think that character should count for something. Particularly for people who are in leadership roles.

Answer: You're forgetting Tommy Greene from the 1993 staff. He was 16-4 that year. Schilling's 1993 was not better than Hamels 2008. There's a whole run difference in ERA.

Madson is the right-handed set up man, so should be compared with Larry Andersen. David West was the left-handed set up man and should be campared with J. C. Romero. The 2008 bullpen is better than the 1993 bullpen.

You are also forgetting that the 1993 used a platoon in the outfield. It was Pete Incaviglia in left and Wes Chamberlain in right vs. left-handers and Milt Thompson in left and Jim Eisenreich in right vs. right-handers. The same platoon was used at 2B after Stocker came up from the minors. It was Morandini vs. right-handers and Mariano Duncan vs. left-handers. Before Stocker's call up, Duncan played SS after they gave up on Juan Bell.

So, if you're going to compare by position, you have to take into a account the platoons; but the 1993 Phils did not get 1 win away from a World Series Championship.

Answer: C.

Catchers are rarely associated with batting skills, and are often languishing at the bottom of orders. They are employed based on their ability to call games, defend the plate, and throw out runners. Yes, I know that there are exceptions, but good hitting catchers are usually moved to other positions at the first opportunity. Joe Mauer, Darren Daulton and Mike Piazza were asked to play 1B, Craig Biggio was moved to 2B, Bryce Harper is being converted to an OF, etc.

SS, 2B and CF are usually prized for their range, so even if they are not POWER hitters, they are usually good at getting on base with speed and patience, and causing havoc on the basepads, so they have more of an offensive impact. They also don't have to work at pitching the way Catchers do, so more of their time can be dedicated to improving their at-bat skills.
