Explain the difference between act and rule utilitarianism! Which is better and why?
Explain the difference between act and rule utilitarianism! Which is better and why?
Answer: The primary difference is the basis of the ethical dilemma. Under act utilitarianism the first consideration is an action that produced pleasure whereas under rule utilitarianism the first consideration is a rule that is questioned on basis of application to a larger whole for an extended period of time with a large percentage of results producing happiness.

My hamster died and now my other hamster is acting different. Will getting a new one get her to act normal aga?
act normal again?
Thank you all for answering. But the hamster that died was in a different cage and the hamster thats sad now never liked her anyways. What do you think now?
Answer: First, as much as it will sound like a cliche, I'm sorry for your lost, and I know how you feel.
I owned two hamsters and they lived in the same cage. Caramel and Charcoal. Caramel died, and Charcoal started to act very different, like an old grump. He would only get out to eat and go back inside to sleep. He would also try to bite me.
So then I got a third hamster, Chocolate, and at the moment I put Chocolate in Charcoal's cage, they both fought so hard that Chocolate got a nasty bite on his nose.
So...in a nutshell...
I wouldn't recommend getting a new hamster for your old one, as sad as it may seem. You can try, and risk it, but it wouldn't be the smartest thing. Also, I'm sure you are in grief, and getting a new hamster while grieving won't help you a lot.
P.S. After the incident, we had to buy a new cage for Chocolate.

What does it mean to act in a truly human way?
What does it mean to act in a truly human way? Please answer in your own words.
Answer: My first thought would be to do an act of kindness to humanity. Then I thought maybe you meant to act in a manner that fulfills the lusts of the human nature, which is being selfish and greedy. The Bible tells us that we are to die out to the deeds of the flesh and to walk in newness of life. When we allow Christ to work in us and through us, we do reach out with compassion and kindness to our fellowman.

Why do I act different around my dad then I do my mom?
I act around my mom as myself I feel. Lack of humor, serious, low tolerance for stupidity and getting things done. But around my dad I act all goofy and say stupid things and say silly stuff. I also act Feminine around him I guess and I act Mescalin around my mom. Does this make sense? Why is it?
Answer: Everyone acts differently around different people. You've probably just learned that in order to get the responses you want from your parents you need to act serious around your mom and silly around your dad.

What ACT scores are needed in order to get accepted to the university of hawii? And is it a good school?
What act scores are needed for acceptance, and is the U of Hawii a good school anyway?
Answer: An ACT score of over 21 on each part will put you just above the 25th percentile and you could probably could be admitted with an ACT score of 22 and an unweighted GPA of at least 3.25 if you are in about the top half of your class or higher.
It is a good school, though not an outstanding one. The only reasons for an out of state student to go there is if it offers a desired major which is not offered at the student's home state university or if the student wants to spend the university years in Hawaii. Doing the latter seems both attractive and distracting.

What are some alternatives to the three act structure in screenplays?
Ime having trouble with putting three acts in my screenplay because in act two I would have to write three main problems that occur, which I think would be too much and not fit the structure. These problems are the foundation of the story. this is my first screenplay...ime 16.
Answer: Can you write these problems into act 1. This might allow you to expand on them in act 2. It would also allow you to create the necessary drama, comedy routines, etc, with act 3 being the finisher.
You could also try the Tarantino method of starting right in the middle of the story and working backwards. This can be much more difficult to work on, but may prove easier for you.

How the fair tax act will affect my future?
Lets say the fair tax act has passed and it is in motion. How would the fair tax act affect someone who has graduated college and is planning on opening their own psychologist office? Is it more beneficial to small business and if so in what ways?
Answer: If it were to pass it would benefit your business in several ways. Businesses are taxed heavily currently especially small business. Under the fair tax act you wouldn't have to pay self employment tax, employee tax, social security tax (business owners pay double social security tax currently plus they pay it for each of their employees). On the down side you are going to pay a much higher percentage of your income on sales tax than you ever did in federal tax using the current system. It favors the rich greatly because the more you make the less of a percentage goes towards sales tax.
We definitely need a tax system overhaul in my humble opinion but the fair tax act isn't the answer.

Can anyone state the difference between a criminal act and a terrorist act?
Is it a terrorist act only when certain groups/nationalities do it or can non-arabs be terrorists? Can criminal acts by Americans,Europeans or Israelis be considered terrorist acts?
Please dont copy/paste out of a dictionary or any other source, use your own words. I know there are some users here that can only copy/paste without crediting the source, they can skip the question. Feel free to give examples with your answer though.
Answer: Anyone can be a terrorist. A terrorist act is when the act is done to provoke fear and uncertainty (9/11, London bombs in the UK) normally with a reason behind it. Religion, against the government etc. An animal rights activist placing a bomb at a venue where products are tested on animals to promote fear into the employees and the company would also be a terrorist. People could of course be the process, but in the terrorist minds, this would just be part of causing fear.
A simple crime is just something against the law. A bomb may be placed to kill a certain person, or a group of people - this would be a crime, not a terrorist act, for the bomb wasnt placed for the reason of causing chaos in peoples minds, but to kill someone for reasons other than to create fear.

Ime having trouble with putting three acts in my screenplay because in act two I would have to write three main problems that occur, which I think would be too much and not fit the structure. These problems are the foundation of the story. this is my first screenplay...ime 16.
Answer: i take it you are talking about is something like this:
http://www.cod.edu/people/faculty/pruter/film/threeact.htm
where you have the three acts. if you notice the incident happens in the first act.
This three act srtucture goes along with Todorov theory:
"Todorov proposed a basic structure for all narratives. He stated that films and programmes begin with an equilibrium, a calm period. Then agents of disruption cause disequilibrium, a period of unsettlement and disquiet. This is then followed by a renewed state of peace and harmony for the protagonists and a new equilibrium brings the chaos to an end. The simplest form of narrative (sometimes referred to as ‘Classic’ or ‘Hollywood’ narrative)."
Taken from: http://www.esfmedia.com/page/Narrative+theory
so that is the most liner simple way of writing a screenplay in both the problems can be the very beginning you just have to show about 5 minutes of a certain normality before things start getting out of hand. Now depending on the type of film depends on what normality is.
Films that follow this structure are you classic disney fairytales, such a Shrek where all is well, then he comes upon a problem and then he sorts it out so all is well in the end.
However many films do not follow this narrative structure, films such as Memento (that starts at the end and goes finnishes at the beginning) or The Prestige which jumps from past to present to future all the time. These story lines allow you to leave the viewer in more suspense and make it harder for them to guess whats coming.
I would suggest watching the films I Have suggested to get an idea of different narative structures, which may help you!!!

How is it that hydroxide ions act as a bases and a nucleophiles?
In nucleophilic substitution aqueous hydroxide ions act as nucleophiles, however in anhydrous elmination reaction they act as a base. Why does this happen, is it to do with the presence of water and if so how does this effect it?
Answer: It acts as a base by accepting hydrogen ions; a base is defined as an acceptor of protons and a proton is simply a H+ ion.
It can act as a nucleophile as it has a negative charge and so is attracted to positive areas.

Whats the difference between an act, regulation, and a bill?
I believe an act is composed of regulations. But what of the bill and an act?
Troll? What an age of paranoia we live in.
Answer: A bill is a piece of legislation making it's way through a level of government but which has not yet been adopted or accepted and made official.
An act is a piece of legislation that has been voted on and made official. It is what a bill becomes once it's passed. In order to change an Act it must work it's way through the government again and be voted upon by the politicians.
Regulations are rules that are enacted to further enhance or clarify an Act. What this means is that the agency responsible for the Act can make and/or change the regulations themselves (as long as they remain within the scope of the Act) without having to go back to the government.
- A politician drafts a BILL to regulate the sale of liquor and to lower the drinking age to 18;
- The government passes the bill creating an Act relating to the sale of Liquor which states, in part, it can only be sold to those aged 18 or over; and
- In keeping with the Act, the Liquor Board (or what ever it is called in your area) passes a REGULATION outlining that the only acceptable piece of ID to show someone's age is a Drivers License or any other State/Provincial issued official ID.

What are 2 important scenes in act 3 of romeo and juliet?

Like if someone has never read this play, what 2 scenes are important in act 3 that people should know. Thanks.
Answer: Mercutio leads the action in this most dramatic of the five acts. When wounded, he cries out "A plague o' both your houses" (3.1.101), saying it three times to ensure that it becomes a curse. Indeed, it is the plague which causes the final death of both Romeo and Juliet. Friar John says that he was unable to deliver the letter to Romeo because, "the searchers of the town, / Suspecting that we both were in a house / Where the infectious pestilence did reign, / Sealed up the doors, and would not let us forth" (5.2.8-11).
One of the most beautiful soliloquys is that of Juliet when she beckons for nightfall, again representing the contrast to the disorder of the day's events. "Come, gentle night; come, loving, black-browed night, / Give me my Romeo, and when he shall die / Take him and cut him out in little stars, / And he will make the face of heaven so fine / That all the world will be in love with night / And pay no worship to the garish sun" (3.2.20-25).
The Nurse's arrival in this act with information about Romeo and Tybalt reinforces the fact that this is now a tragedy, not a comedy. This can be seen in the contrast of this scene with the first scene where the Nurse withholds information from Juliet. In the first scene, the Nurse is playfully devious in telling Juliet about where Romeo wants to meet her for their marriage. Now however, the same playfulness is no longer comic, rather it is infuriating. In this sense Shakespeare turns the Nurse from a comic character into a tragic character, one who cannot realize the importance of what she is saying.
Juliet's dedication to Romeo emerges very strongly at this point. At first she derides Romeo for killing Tybalt, but she soon has a change of heart and says, "Shall I speak ill of him that is my husband?" (3.2.97). She then states that she would sacrifice ten thousand Tybalts to be with Romeo, and later includes her parents in the list of people she would rather lose than Romeo. This dedication to a husband or lover is something which emerges frequently in Shakespeare, and is a point he tries to emphasize.
Romeo's misery at being banished is clearly shown in his preference for death. "Then 'banished' / Is death mistermed. Calling death 'banished' / Thou cutt'st my head off with a golden axe" (3.3.20-22). Friar Laurence tries to show him that by being alive he at least still has a chance to see Juliet again. Even the Nurse, entering where Romeo is hiding, says, "Stand up, stand up, stand an you be a man" (3.3.88).
The conflict between the older generation and the younger comes to head in the final scene of act three. The Nurse advocates that Juliet forget about Romeo and instead focus on Paris, the virtues of whom she proceeds to extol. Juliet, poisoningly sweet in her sarcasm, sends the Nurse away from her for the first time, remarking, "Ancient damnation!" (3.5.235), both a reference to the Nurse's age and to the problems she must deal with. This leaves Juliet completely alone to face the hostile world.
