WHEN a pharmacy opened in Edgewater late last year, it was greeted with more than a few banners and a welcoming note from the local Chamber of Commerce. For in this municipality along the Hudson River directly across from upper Manhattan, a drugstore is an entirely new thing. Edgewater, pop. 4,600, entered 1984 without a single doctors office in town. There is no supermarket, no hospital, no place to buy a pair of socks. It has two dentists, but their offices have not been open for much more than a year. And until that day last year, borough residents had to leave town to buy a bottle of cough medicine. But the opening of the drugstore represented more than a convenience. The store is on the ground floor of Admirals Walk, an expensive condominium project that is seen as the symbol of a coming transformation.

Plant Worker Hurt In a 5-Alarm Fire
A five-alarm fire at a plastics factory injured a worker and sent a large black cloud of smoke into the air today, forcing the temporary evacuation of 500 residents of a nearby condominium development, officials said. Firefighters from nine communities fought the blaze at the C-Lec Plastics Company here, containing it in about three hours, the police said. A C-Lec employee, Dan Walsh of Riverton, was treated and released from Rancocas Valley Hospital in Willingboro, a hospital spokesman said. Mr. Walsh suffered second- and third-degree burns on his hands and head.
