Mutants and Devils (And a Hero or Two)

All dates are subject to change. May Already Opened An American Haunting -- Tennessee in the 1880s, and a forward-looking demon is already haunting an attractive young teenager (Rachel Hurd Wood) and her family (Donald Sutherland, Sissy Spacek). Courtney Solomon directs. Art School Confidential -- From the Ghost World team -- the director Terry Zwigoff and the graphic novelist Daniel Clowes -- a hard look at life in an East Coast art school, as experienced by a freshman played by Max Minghella. With John Malkovich, Jim Broadbent and Anjelica Huston. Crazy Like a Fox -- Roger Rees as a Southern patriarch who revolts against the carpetbaggers who have taken over his family farm by moving into a cave on the property. With Mary McDonnell. Richard Squires directs. Down in the Valley -- Fleeing from a troubled family, a teenage girl (Evan Rachel Wood) and her sickly younger brother (Rory Culkin) fall in with a wanderer (Edward Norton) who believes hes a cowboy. From the director David Jacobson; it sounds a little more cheerful than his previous film, Dahmer. FOLLOWING SEAN -- The filmmaker Ralph Arlyck returns to San Francisco in search of the 4-year-old flower child he interviewed in 1967. Surprise: Hes got a steady job and is doing a lot better than his hippie father. Hoot -- From Carl Hiaasens childrens book, the story of three grade-school children (Logan Lerman, Brie Larson, Cody Linley) who dedicate themselves to saving a rare Florida owl. Wil Shriner directs a cast that includes Jimmy Buffett as a science teacher and Tim Blake Nelson as the ominously named Curly. How I Killed a Saint -- Macedonia, 2001: a local woman (Labina Mitevska) returns from college in the United States to find her city exploding. Her brother enlists her to help him run money over the border. A first feature by the stars elder sister, Teona Strugar Mitevska. Kiss Me Again -- A married couple invites a second woman to join their relationship, with, of course, unexpected results. With Jeremy London, Katheryn Winnick and Mirelly Taylor. William Tyler Smith directs. Mission: Impossible III -- For a while, it seemed like the impossible mission was getting this much-delayed film into production; the results, under the direction of J. J. Abrams (best known as the creator of Alias and Lost) semi-officially kicked off the summer season. Plenty of fancy explosions, along with Tom Cruise, Ving Rhames, Keri Russell, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Laurence Fishburne, Michelle Monaghan and Jonathan Rhys Meyers. A related article is on Page 12. One Last Thing -- A terminally ill 16-year-old boy (Michael Angarano) has one final wish -- to spend a weekend with a sexy New York supermodel (Sunny Mabrey), who turns out to be as self-involved as, well, those sexy New York supermodels. With Cynthia Nixon, Michael Rispoli, Brian Stokes Mitchell and Gina Gershon; Alex Steyermark directs this digital feature. The Promise -- Chen Kaiges extravagant, C.G.I.-driven martial arts fantasy opens in America 19 minutes shorter than it was in Asia. The plot has something to do with a tortured love triangle involving a princess (the Hong Kong star Cecilia Chung), a despotic king (the Japanese actor Hiroyuki Sanada) and a gallant slave (Jang Dong Gun, from South Korea), set in a distant past where computer animation hasnt quite been perfected but everyone is trying very hard. The Proposition -- The rock star Nick Cave wrote this Australian sort-of-western, with Guy Pearce as a fierce outlaw of the outback who can escape hanging only if he brings in his older brother (Danny Huston). John Hillcoat directs. With Ray Winstone and Emily Watson. Wednesday Cartoons: No Laughing Matter? -- A program of eight animated films that aspire to something other than comedy; includes work by George Griffin, Suzan Pitt, Debra Solomon and J. J. Villard. Russian Dolls -- The French director Cédric Klapisch creates a sequel to his youth comedy LAuberge Espagnole of 2002. Five years after the life-changing summer they spent in Barcelona, a group of students reunite to compare their lives at 30. The cast includes three of Frances leading hotties: Romain Duris, Audrey Tautou and Cécile de France. Thursday Light from the East -- Amy Grappells documentary captures the fall of Communism as witnessed by members of New Yorks La MaMa Experimental Theater Club, in Kiev to perform a play about a legendary theater director murdered by Stalin in the 1930s. Friday Dead Mans Shoes -- Shane Meadows, the faithful chronicler of Britains lower-class youth and their struggles for survival (Once Upon a Time in the Midlands), imagines an American-style revenge thriller set in Derbyshire. Paddy Considine is the ex-soldier who comes home looking for the punks who tortured his mentally challenged younger brother (Tony Kebbell). Giuliani Time -- Kevin Keatings documentary takes a critical look at Rudolph W. Giulianis eight years as mayor of New York City. Goal! The Dream Begins -- More inspirational sports from Touchstone Pictures; this one is the tale of a Mexican-American (Kuno Becker) from Los Angeles whose soccer skills get him drafted into the European big time, where his social skills dont quite measure up. Danny Cannon directs; with Stephen Dillane and Anna Friel. Just My Luck -- Blessed by extraordinary good luck during her whole young life, a recent college graduate played by Lindsay Lohan kisses a stranger at a party, and finds that shes traded her good fortune for bad. The director is the chick-flick veteran Donald Petrie (How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, Miss Congeniality). With Chris Pine and Samaire Armstrong. Keeping Up with the Steins -- An over-the-top Beverly Hills bar mitzvah provides the background for a dysfunctional family comedy. Against the wishes of his father, a Hollywood agent (Jeremy Piven, no type-casting for him!), 13-year-old Benjamin (Daryl Sabara) is determined to invite his estranged grandfather (Garry Marshall) to the big event. Scott Marshall, Garrys son, directs. Mendy: A Question of Faith -- A young Hasidic man (Ivan Sandomire) leaves his community in Brooklyns Williamsburg section and goes looking for himself in the secular world. He finds a Brazilian girlfriend (Gabriela Dias) and many questions in this first film by Adam Vardy. Poseidon -- Andre Braugher plays the captain of the Poseidon, a cruise ship 20 stories tall that flips over when its struck by a gigantic C.G.I. wave, trapping a group of B-list stars who must confront their personal demons while struggling to reach the surface. Directed by the professionally waterlogged Wolfgang Petersen (Das Boot, The Perfect Storm); with Josh Lucas, Kurt Russell, Richard Dreyfuss, Emmy Rossum and Jacinda Barrett. Refuge -- Martin Scorsese, Oliver Stone, Bernardo Bertolucci and Philip Glass are among the heads talking in John Halperns documentary on Buddhism in the contemporary world. Showing with Talking With the Dalai Lama, a 27-minute interview at his home in Dharamsala, India. SAVING SHILOH -- From Phyllis Reynolds Naylors childrens book -- the last in a trilogy -- about a sixth-grader who saves the lives of a dog and his down-and-out former owner. With Jason Dolley and Scott Wilson. Sandy Tung directs. Sketches of Frank Gehry -- The longtime director Sydney Pollack takes a stab at the documentary with a profile of the prominent architect. Wah-Wah -- The actor Richard E. Grant directs this coming-of-age story, from his script based on his own childhood in Swaziland in the 1960s. Gabriel Byrne and Miranda Richardson are the boys feuding parents. When he returns from two years in boarding school he finds his mother replaced by Emily Watson. May 18 Forgiving Dr. Mengele -- An Auschwitz survivor, Eva Mozes Kor, courts controversy by publicly forgiving Josef Mengele, the notorious Nazi doctor who performed experiments on her and her twin sister. Bob Hercules and Cheri Pugh direct this documentary. May 19 The Da Vinci Code -- The intrepid symbologist Robert Langdon (Tom Hanks) struggles to decipher the cryptic message left behind by a murdered man -- a message that leads him to the biggest cover-up in human history, as perpetrated by a secret society within the Roman Catholic Church. I know what it is, but Im not telling! Ron Howard directs; Audrey Tautou, Ian McKellen, Alfred Molina, Jürgen Prochnow, Paul Bettany and Jean Reno round out the globe-hopping cast. A related article is on Page 5. The King -- Gael García Bernal goes in search of his estranged father, and finds him the pastor of a megachurch in Corpus Christi, Tex. But the older man (William Hurt) has a new family, and wants nothing to do with this inconvenient reminder of his checkered past, so the son sets out to seduce his own 16-year-old half-sister (Pell James) for revenge. James Marsh (Wisconsin Death Trip) directs; with Paul Dano and Laura Harring. Lemming -- A young couple (Charlotte Gainsbourg and Laurent Lucas), newly transplanted to a suburb in the south of France, enter into a strange, complex relationship with the husbands new boss (André Dussollier) and his sinister wife (Charlotte Rampling). Complicating matters: a strange rodent in the plumbing. From Dominique Moll, the director of With a Friend Like Harry Mouth to Mouth -- Drifting through Europe, a disaffected teenager (Ellen Page) falls in with a radical political cult. Alison Murray directs, basing her script on personal experience. The other vocal talent includes Garry Shandling, Steve Carell, William Shatner, Avril Lavigne, Nick Nolte and Catherine OHara. Tim Johnson and Karey Kirkpatrick direct. A related article is on Page 12. See No Evil -- A horror film co-produced by Lionsgate and World Wrestling Entertainment. The direction is in the sure hands of Brett Ratner (Red Dragon).
