TV NEWS MAGAZINES AIM AT DIVERSE VIEWERS
They are both magazine-format programs, and they are both produced by network news divisions. But the sharply distinctive styles of CBSs West 57th Street and NBCs American Almanac, which will have their premieres in the next two weeks, suggest a television journalism traveling in divergent directions. West 57th Street, named for the street on which the CBS News offices stand, represents an experiment in form and structure and style, according to Howard Stringer, the executive vice president of CBS News. Television, he said, has become technically sophisticated. Even commercials are very sophisticated. We are looking at commercials, at Steven Spielberg and George Lucas, and asking how do we find a way to tap into new ideas and new technologies?

He denounced Mr. Clinton for accusing him of repeatedly lying about his knowledge of the Iran arms-for-hostage affair in 1986. The President -- on the third stop of a train trip through Wisconsin intended to project an image of confidence and momentum -- then unleashed a scorching recital of what he called Mr. Clintons deceptions and reversals on seven issues, including his draft history, his use of marijuana and his positions on free trade, right-to-work laws and the Persian Gulf war. WORLD ALMANAC FACT: ITS A NO. 1 BEST SELLER
It has taken more than a century, but The World Almanac and Book of Facts, the reference book that has been called on to settle innumerable disputes, is indisputably a No. 1 best seller: the 928-page potpourri of facts and figures is in first place in the category of paperback Advice, How- To and Miscellaneous books. Were all very proud, said Jane D. Flatt, the publisher of World Almanac Publications Inc. Theres some luck involved but there was also a lot of hard work and dedication. The luck refers to the fact that The New York Times revamped its best-seller lists two years ago to include reference books. Nevertheless, with more than 1,760,000 copies of the 1985 edition in print, the Almanacs success would appear to be less the result of recent good luck than of its 117-year-old legacy of providing brief, accurate information on an endless array of subjects.
