Whats the different between the Miss USA pageant and the Miss America pageant?
Does Miss America go to the Miss World pageant and Miss USA goes to the Miss Universe pageant? Im so confused so if anyone could explain to me this "system", that would be great!
Answer: The Miss American pageant is a scholarship contest mainly judged by talent and private interview. Contestants are required to have a talent and a "platform" which is a current issue in the United States that needs change (i.e.: Homeless Awareness, Eating Disorders Awareness). The winner of Miss America earns a $50,000 scholarship. The Miss USA pageant requires no talent or philanthropic cause. Miss USA goes to Miss Universe. Miss America spends a year promoting her platform around the country. I don't know much about the Miss World pageant...I assume it's something like Miss USA.

Whats the difference between Miss America and Miss USA?
There is a girl from my state who is Miss America... Then I found out they had a Miss USA... Im confussed, whats the difference?
Answer: The Miss America pageant focus's on girls actual intelligence. The scoring is 40% Talent, 30% evening gown, 20% interview and 10% swimsuit ( or something like that)
Miss USA doesn't have a talent competition! ( GO FIGURE untalented woman! lol) its 30% bathing suit, 30$ interview/final question and 30% evening gown.
Also Miss America REQUIRES you be a student at an accredited University attending 12 hours or more ( full-time) and requires you provide your GPA, you also have to provide all the information on your school, major, etc. If you are 17 or under you have to provide all the high school information, making this pageant more of a " Beauty and Brains" pageant. These woman are much less "sexy" as most would say, but SMART and GOING PLACES. This pageant leads to " Miss World"
The Miss USA pageant is sponsored by Donald Trump, and features many celebrity judges. ( VERY comercialized) The woman here are basically really beautiful models, who apparently don't have much of a brain. If you watched it this Sunday ( April 19) Miss Arizona had no idea really what she was talking about when she was asked for her opinion on Socialized medicine. She kinda beat around the bush to say she has no opinion..... figures. This pageant leads to Miss Universe, which is very seldom won by Miss USA. The past few years the Latin beauties of Columbia, Brazil, and Venezuela have won.
Anyway yup there is your difference.

Whats the difference between the Miss USA and the Miss America pageant?
I dont understand all the pageants and their preliminaries. Theres a Miss America, Miss World, Miss Universe, Miss Earth, Miss USA, but whats the order of succession?
Is it, for example, winner of Miss New York goes to Miss USA and then winner of Miss USA goes to Miss World?
Can somebody clarify??
Answer: The shortest answer to this question is that it's really like the difference between Nike & Puma...just two different brands, but both running shoes. Both pageants have long and varied histories, but Miss USA goes on to Miss Universe and is a Trump owned organization. Miss America is not a part of Trump.
The differences in the competition is that Miss America has a talent portion. Usually Miss USA will be a little more glam and Miss America is a little more 'woman next door'.
Some major differences include....
* Miss America is the more established of the two pageants (est 1921). Miss USA has not been around as long (est 1952).
* Miss USA is part of a network of pageants including Miss Teen USA and Miss Universe. Miss USA goes on to compete in the global Miss Universe competition while Miss America does not have a world-wide event.
* There is no talent section at Miss USA while the talent section in the Miss America pageant still plays a major role.

How young is too young to attend the Miss America pageant?
My family and I are planning to attend the Miss America pageant this January in Las Vegas. Our only question is what to do with my little sister. Shes six years old and we worry that shell be too young to attend. However, weve never been to a Miss America pageant and are unsure how conducive it is to young children. If anyone can offer any advice on if a six-year-old is too young, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!
Answer: It's good of you to ask. As long as she's not participating, hopefully the experience won't injure her self-image, and may give her something to dream about. You know her psyche best, though. Best wishes on what you decide.

Why is the Miss America pageant being shown on TLC?
After all, TLC is the abbreviation for The Learning Channel, and what educational value could the Miss America pageant possibly have? Oh, well! Perhaps TLC is going the same route as MTV, which used to be all about music, but now shows nothing but crappy "reality" shows.
No, I DO NOT want to see it!:) So-called beauty pageants are just a bunch of antiquated garbage.
Answer: It is a question of who paid for the rights to air the program. Apparently, The Learning Channel won the bid or negotiated a better deal than other cable or broadcast channels who might have bid to cover this pageant. It's just about business.
Your perception that the Miss America pageant should have been carried by one of the major broadcast channels (ABC, CBS, NBC) may come from a view from yesteryear that the Miss America pageant was something that almost belonged to the American people since the person who won supposedly represented the best that America could produce. With the proliferation of so many cable channels, there has been competition for programming so you have new buyers snatching up programs that used to be the domain of others.
My general sense about the entire Miss America organization is that it has had a history of controversy in terms of how it was managed and what it stood for. What is the definition of what the "best female" in America should be? How important is looks over intellect? Does talent in a performing art really matter? Should contestants wear 1 piece or 2 piece bathing suits?
In my opinion, Miss America started losing favor when they began incorporating all these supposedly politically correct ideas of what a "real woman" should be, de-emphasizing beauty and lot letting contestants wear a 2 piece bathing suit if they wanted to. The whole bathing suit competition was thought to be borderline sexist in a world of more professional women who wanted to be appreciated for their minds versus their bodies.
Come on!
This was and still should be a "beauty pageant" so physical beauty should never have had to take a back seat to everything else. They went overboard for a period of years (in my opinion) and I stopped having any faith that the "Miss America" pageant was a valid competition or measuring what it was supposed to, at least in terms of representing the best America could produce.
But this January 2009 Miss America Pageant I thought was a great come-back for the organization. First of all, somebody did something smart (TLC) by creating shows in advance of the Pageant that showcased the contestants doing various things like getting lessons on how to walk down a runway. I believe they had sporting games too, somewhat like they would do in the Survivor series, pitting the red team against the blue team, all in the name of one of Miss America's hallmark values, Physicall Fitness" (code word for do they look good in a bathing suit).
I also noticed in the national "Parade" magazine (a Sunday insert in many local newspapers) an advertisement with a picture of all the contestants along with a follow-along ballot and a website where folks could send in predictions, I believe. All of this was very savvy marketing to cross promote and to do so well in advance of the actual event. And in my opinion, I think this year's Miss America pageant was better promoted and better-run than most of the past Miss America pageants I have seen in recent years. I now think it is back on par with the Miss USA Pageant which Donald Trump has done a lot to modernize and cross promote to a higher level of awareness and appreciation by viewers.
So HAT'S OFF to the folks at The Learning Channel for bringing this popular American tradition back or at least more to the center of what Americans seem to want to watch versus all the politically correct garbage the pageant had been mired in for years past.
Donald Trump owns the Miss USA pageant so one should not automaticaly perceive any of these pageants bearing the name of America or the USA as being the automatic property of one of the major broadcast networks. Just because it says "American Broadcastingg Company/ABC" or "National Broadcasting Company/NBC" doesn't mean they automatically stand for the American people or it's citizens.
In fact I think it is interesting how the "mainstream media" has been criticized as becoming out of touch with a big chunk of America now, but you can attribute this to the EVOLUTION of broadcasting and the proliferation of cable, satellite, and other media distribution channels like internet. Media has been fractionalized and there is now disintermediation such that folks tune in directly to the channel that stands for exactly what they want to see versus getting everything through a few major middlemen with content amalgamated, filtered and sweetened, the way the big networks have done for years when this was only a business dominated by 3 networks.
Thank you for asking this question. It appears you may not care for beauty pageants and you are entitled to your opinion. Many people DO appreciate beauty pageants, though, as evidenced by the large audience that they draw. And I leave it to individual Responders here to make up their own mind about pageants since everyone has their own clicker or channel knob at home.

Can you compete in Miss America at 23 if you started pageants at 19?
Okay so Im 13 right now and I really dont have the time to do pageants right now. Is it possible that if you started pageants at 19 you could compete in Miss America at 23??? And is 23 to old to be Miss America? Thanks!
Answer: I just looked at the Miss America Website, and it doesn't appear that it matters if you've competed in any prior competitions. These are the only guidelines:
Be between the ages of 17 and 24.
Be a United States citizen.
Meet residency requirements for competing in a certain town or state.
Meet character criteria as set forth by the Miss America Organization.
Be in reasonably good health to meet the job requirements.
Be able to meet the time commitment and job responsibilities as set forth by the local program in which you compete.
