THE opening season of the Brooklyn Academy of Music Theater Company has come to a smashing finale with The Marriage Dance, a duet of one-act farces by Bertolt Brecht and Georges Feydeau. And when I say smashing, Im speaking both figuratively and literally. Brechts The Wedding and Feydeaus The Purging are not only screamingly funny, but they also unleash as much physical havoc as one might hope to find in a civilized theater. In The Wedding, the guests at a nuptial feast slowly but surely destroy a living room chair by chair, limb by limb. In The Purging, an elegant Parisian study gradually becomes a sea of smashed porcelain chamber pots. Faint-of-heart theatergoers would be advised not to sit too close to the stage. As always, the Brooklyn company is calling our attention to plays that are rarely seen in New York. On this occasion, David Jones, the groups adventurous artistic director, has come up with two small but perfect gems written more than half a century ago. Both farces are models of craftsmanship that echo the major works of their authors. Both are presented in contemporary, but not gratuitously trendy translations. Andre Ernotte, the director of the evening, has lovingly recreated the high style of classic farce, and he has gotten the most out of a generally fine, if uneven, acting troupe. He has also solved the tricky problems of the Brooklyn Academy of Musics ungainly Lepercq Space by setting a proscenium stage down in the middle of the theater and seating the audience on either side.

Its no secret that the outstanding British farce of the moment is being written every day by the royal family. But who is going to write the great tragedy this reeling former empire demands? Battered by recession and terrorism, uncertain of its relationship with either the new Europe or the new Washington, Britain would seem, if little else, a fertile subject for its serious native playwrights. But the most celebrated drama in London this year has been Angels in America, by Tony Kushner, a New Yorker, and the most acclaimed contemporary works on the fringe right now are The Wexford Trilogy, in which the playwright Billy Roche examines small-town life in his native Ireland, and the expatriate American Timberlake Wertenbakers satire on the art market, Three Birds Alighting on a Field. The Wertenbaker play is in a return engagement at the Royal Court, which has already produced John Guares Six Degrees of Separation this year and will soon present Anna Deavere Smiths Fires in the Mirror and David Mamets Oleanna.

Nichol Hlinka never thought she would become a dancer, much less a principal with the New York City Ballet, or even a student at the School of American Ballet. For one thing, she was less than five feet tall when she was 13 and auditioned for the school, affiliated with City Ballet. Everyone knew that was too short for a dancer, especially one in a company filled with skyscraper-size ballerinas. But they got very excited when I started to jump, Ms. Hlinka recalled with a smile. Three years later, in 1975, she joined City Ballet. And she has been soaring, spinning and speeding through a huge repertory of roles ever since.. The Bronx Arts Ensembles concert series Summermusic 93 ends on Sunday with two free chamber-music concerts in the Bronx, at 2 P.M. at the Rockwood Drive Circle in Van Cortlandt Park (near Broadway and Mosholu Avenue), and at 4 P.M. at the McGinley Center of Fordham University, Rose Hill Campus, at Southern Boulevard. Approaching the Finale of a Daring Era
Of the six compositions presented this week by the St. Louis Symphony, only Haydns Symphony No. 70 was written outside the present century. Leonard Slatkin is in his final season with the St. Louis, and his concerts on Wednesday and Thursday at Carnegie Hall summed up some exceptionally adventuresome programming over 17 years. Peter Mennin, Luciano Berio, Claude Baker, Elgar and Rachmaninoff made for a peculiar 20th-century syllabus, but the resourceful Mr. Slatkin made them work together, even when individual pieces caused puzzlement. The one brand-new work, Mr. Bakers four-movement Whispers and Echoes, was the most puzzling. Its most striking passages are direct quotations, strangely devoid of context or point of view. The echoes are subtle at first: Ravels Trois Poemes de Mallarme, trilling winds out of Strausss Salome. The third movement modifies a 14th-century rondeau by Baude Cordier, scattered in hazy fragments through the brass.

It seemed going into the weekend that the only major news at the Tanglewood Festival here would be the start of the annual Festival of Contemporary Music under a new director, the composer Bright Sheng. This six-day event, which capitalizes on the presence of so many brilliantly talented musicians studying at the Tanglewood Music Center, is devoting itself entirely to American music for the first time in several decades. Two standard-issue concerts by Kurt Masur and the New York Philharmonic, it appeared, could prove only anticlimactic, the last in a long run of farewells. After Mr. Masurs stirring final subscription weeks as the Philharmonics music director in May and June, and a parting tour of Europe and Asia, things bogged down a little on Thursday in his last New York concert as music director, an unfocused 75th-birthday tribute at the Lincoln Center Festival.. Death comes to all things, including successful television series. When the inevitable occurs, most popular series like to go out with a bang, figuratively speaking. The bang, however, was literal when the cast and crew of NBC-TVs Little House on the Prairie filmed their last episode a few weeks ago. The Last Farewell will be seen tonight. It concludes with perhaps the most apocalyptic valedictory to any television series in history: the townspeople of the fictional hamlet Walnut Grove decide to blow their town to smithereens. And so the entire set that the company had inhabited for the last 10 years was actually dynamited for this finale.
