Legends Strike a Pose, With or Without Music
The rock star Madonna and the photographer Nan Goldin, each a legend in her own right, share some artistic territory that, complete with pitfalls, is being highlighted by overlapping gallery exhibitions in SoHo and Chelsea. Both artists emerged from the East Village in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Working on opposite sides of the camera, each became known for images that were postmodern revelations of the flesh. Both gained prominence from setting these images to music. Madonna was one of several musicians who helped rock-star flamboyance become a fixture of the American television landscape. I remember watching her squirm around on a gondola in Venice while lip-synching Like a Virgin (this was 1984) and thinking it was new and different. Now it counts as a signal moment in the early years of music-video art.. Julia Karin Ormond, the 30-year old female lead opposite Brad Pitt of the $63 million hit Legends of the Fall and a star of two more big movies coming out this year, First Knight (opposite Sean Connery and Richard Gere) and Sabrina (opposite Harrison Ford), wants a drink of water. Needs one rather desperately, in fact. But shes stuck hobnobbing at this star-studded private cocktail party. Right now she has just met Sherry Lansing, and the effervescent Paramount Pictures chairwoman is telling her how great the dailies have been from Sabrina, how great Julia is in them, how great the movie is going.. Its all very exciting to Ormond, of course, but is there no one here who can get her a plain glass of water without ice? She needs it right away, because in a few minutes she has to leave this reception, enter a cavernous ballroom at Ballys Hotel in Las Vegas, pause elegantly in front of a horde of paparazzi screaming her name and mount a dais where she will sit next to Mark Canton, chairman of Columbia Tri-Star Motion Picture Companies, tell him how smart he was to release Legends when he did and make the first award acceptance speech of her movie career. A crowd of 3,500 movie-theater owners are, at the moment, crunching on thick heads of iceberg lettuce and pitted black olives. But at least each of the exhibitors gathered there in early March for the National Association of Theater Owners Sho West -- an annual movie-industry lovefest put on for the folks who bring you overpriced popcorn and nonpareils -- has his or her own personal glass of water, while Ormond does not.

You see, fiendish Boss Undercrawl needs to find a dump site for his factorys runoff sludge, and he has his shifty eyes set on tumbledown Mudville Stadium, where the nascent sport of baseball is being tested with its first, gawky games. Thus we have the central crisis of Casey at the Bat, a freewheeling adaptation of Ernest Thayers enduring 1888 poem that is the latest chapter of Shelley Duvalls Tall Tales and Legends, arriving on Showtime Friday evening at 8. With Miss Duvall as executive producer, the 60-minute period piece stars Elliott Gould as Casey - here a struggling slugger with an unseemly weakness for hotdogs, whose home run is needed to save the day - and Carol Kane as his fickle inamorata. As taped in a Hollywood studio under David Steinbergs direction, the program also features Rae Dawn Chong - currently in The Color Purple - as a snaky temptress-for-hire, and Howard Cosell as a sportscaster who recites snatches of Thayers poem, sometimes while wearing a rubber pigs nose.

He is only the tallest, cutest and generally most plausible of the several Elvis Presley impersonators connected with the Las Vegas revue of the title, a mesmerizingly sad spectacle that Ms. Bar-Din examines with tremendous verve, economy and wisdom. Legends unfolds on the borderline between show business and science fiction, under the aegis of John Stuart, a Dr. Frankenstein in fringed buckskin. Mr. Stuart, the impresario behind the Legends concept, prides himself on his ability to create a new Elvis, Marilyn or Judy in a day, should there be any unwelcome displays of independence from the old ones.

But his heart, it seems, belongs to the stages where his career began, at the age of 9, in the Yiddish theaters on Second Avenue. Many generations of schoolchildren have learned the story of Pocahontas, the young Powhatan Indian woman whose entreaties to her father saved Capt. As many a hip-hop artist will tell you, going mainstream while maintaining street credibility is no easy task. Think of Rennie Harris as the exception who proves the rule. Mr. Harris, a Philadelphia-based dancer and choreographer, has earned a Bessie Award for his efforts to bring a hip-hop aesthetic to the stage of theaters like the Joyce and Dance Theater Workshop, and has kept the respect of the hip-hop world while doing so. Now he is paying tribute to the cultures gritty roots with Rennie Harris New York Legends of Hip-Hop, which showcases DJs, beatboxers and dancers. The lineup reads like a Whos Who of hip-hop performers, including Teknyc (above), Pop Master Fabel and the Bronx b-boy group the Rock Steady Crew. The show also includes the tight choreographic combinations and freestyle freezes of the Mop Top Crew, and video clips from the genres early days.
