A Matronly Aesthetic With a Subversive Twist
Halfway through the Marc Jacobs show on Monday night, around 10:30, it probably hit some of the older men in the audience at the New York State Armory on Lexington Avenue that they were witnessing a frightening vision of their mothers. Years of waking up in a cold bath of sweat, of running from the old ball and chain, and here she was, amid the cool kids at Marc Jacobs, a vision in crepey Wheatena lace with a lynx cape thrown over her shoulders and a red velvet ribbon sagging gloriously at her bosom. Well, for those men, there is no other way to look at Mr. Jacobss collection of matron tweeds and scoop-back dresses in jolly turquoise lace except as a limited-interest category. Yet, because Mr. Jacobs was inspired in part by the surrealist paintings of John Currin and the eclectic fashion sense of his wife, the artist Rachel Feinstein, and in part by the revelation in Helmut Newtons memoir that even a woman of Margaret Thatchers girth and rectitude could be a turn-on, the clothes and the ideas embodied in them might merit a second look.. A Dispute Over Books Unsettles South Africa
For writers in South Africa, the news blew in last week like a cold wind from an ugly past: a panel of teachers had deemed several literary works unsuitable for high schools in the province that includes Johannesburg. The writings included Hamlet, Nadine Gordimers Julys People, and the works of the black authors Dambudzo Marachera of Zimbabwe and Njabulo Ndebele of South Africa. For Ms. Gordimer, the panels recommendation was a chilling reminder of the days when South Africas white government banned three of her novels for their sympathetic portrayal of blacks. A fierce opponent of apartheid and a winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature, she was stunned to see her novel Julys People described as deeply racist, superior and patronizing..
