Trading the assertive grittiness of Kids for a more exuberant visual style, he brings bizarrely innocent enthusiasm to material that would otherwise ooze shock value, and merely shrugs off those parts of this story that would be easiest to exploit. This may be one of the reasons why Born Yesterday, based on Garson Kanins classic 1946 Broadway farce, plays so lamely in its glitzy new film version updated to the 1990s. You can take Billie Dawn out of the chorus, but you cant take her out of her own post-World War II time. Its difficult to believe that this Billie Dawn, played by Melanie Griffith, even shares the same planet with Oprah Winfrey and Phil Donahue. Snug in their Saturday afternoon play world, the actors gleefully pluck whatever garish costumes catch their eye from a giant trunk and turn the pop culture wars of the last half-century into sophisticated childrens theater. Watching Mr. Waterss movies, you always have the us-against-them notion of 1950s squares being tweaked by bohemians, hippies and freaks. Or, to look at it differently, the world is divided into grim, gray-faced adults and a liberated minority who refuse to grow up and like nothing better than to expose themselves at the dinner table..
