N.C.A.A. Selection Day | Analyzing the Mens Bracket
Predicted winners in capital letters. *Denotes game is an upset. ALBUQUERQUE This will definitely be the wild, wild West. Look for numerous upsets in this regional, which has a weak No. 1 seeding in Washington and a solid crew of middle-seeded teams. Look for No. 2 Wake Forest to advance to the regional final and play Georgia Tech. Washington may not even make it to Albuquerque; Pitt could bully the Huskies in the second round. Ultimately, Wakes balance and depth will carry it to St. Louis. STRONG IN THE MIDDLE No. 1 WASHINGTON vs. No. 16 Montana -- The Grizzlies at least have a short trip home to Boise. No. 8 Pacific vs. No. 9 PITTSBURGH -- Pitt will win a low-scoring slugfest between similar teams. No. 5 GEORGIA TECH vs. No. 12 George Washington -- Bad matchup for the upset-minded Colonials. No. 4 Louisville vs. No. 13 LA. LAFAYETTE -- Look for Rick Pitino to go in another first-round upset. No. 6 Texas Tech vs. No. 11 U.C.L.A. -- Watch for flying chairs, and for hot Tech to be cooled off. No. 3 GONZAGA vs. No. 14 Winthrop -- Gonzaga should roll to the Round of 16. No. 7 WEST VIRGINIA vs. No. 10 Creighton -- W.V.U.s shooting will carry it in a battle of hot teams. No. 2 WAKE FOREST vs. No. 15 Chattanooga -- The Mocs will wish Chris Paul were still suspended. AUSTIN This is a tricky region to pick. No. 1 Duke isnt as talented as in past years. No. 2 Kentuckys shaky recent play is a harbinger for an early exit. No. 3 Oklahoma is talented but inexperienced. No. 4 Syracuse is a hot team that faces two tough early matchups. Ultimately, it is hard to pick against Duke. Two home games in Charlotte make it a much easier road, and J.J. Redick has proved he can carry a team. FEW SURPRISES No. 1 DUKE vs. No. 16 Delaware State -- Blue Devils should get a chance to rest J.J. Redick. No. 8 STANFORD vs. No. 9 Mississippi State -- Stanford will win the honor of being bashed by Duke. No. 5 MICHIGAN ST. vs. No. 12 Old Dominion -- Spartans will avoid another first-round upset, barely. No. 4 SYRACUSE vs. No. 13 Vermont -- Tom Brennans last call will ruin his St. Patricks Day. No. 6 Utah vs. No. 11 TEXAS-EL PASO -- Gritty Miners will outmuscle Andrew Bogut. No. 3 OKLAHOMA vs. No. 14 Niagara -- Sooners defense holds on in a classic clash of styles. No. 7 CINCINNATI vs. No. 10 Iowa -- Bearcats will outmuscle the depleted Hawkeyes. No. 2 KENTUCKY vs. No. 15 Eastern Kentucky -- Great story lines. Bad game. Kentucky will roll. SYRACUSE This is the most top-heavy bracket, with North Carolina, UConn and Kansas the top three. But all have questions. North Carolina needs to integrate Rashad McCants into the lineup. UConn played poorly in the Big East tournament. Kansas has struggled to stay healthy. Ultimately, its hard to trust the Tar Heels, with their shaky chemistry and Roy Williamss history in the N.C.A.A. tournament. Look for UConn to advance. HEAVY AT THE TOP No. 1 NORTH CAROLINA vs. No. 16 Alabama A&M -- Even the mercurial Heels cant mess this one up. No. 8 Minnesota vs. No. 9 IOWA STATE -- Cyclones talented backcourt will slice up Gophers. No. 5 VILLANOVA vs. No. 12 New Mexico -- Lobos are hot, but the Wildcats are too talented. No. 4 FLORIDA vs. No. 13 Ohio -- Billy Donovan and the Gators will delay their annual early exit. No. 6 WISCONSIN vs. No. 11 Northern Iowa -- Badgers swing offense will befuddle Panthers. No. 3 KANSAS vs. No. 14 Bucknell -- Bisons beat Pitt this season, but Kansas is too tough. No. 7 Charlotte vs. No. 10 N.C. STATE -- Wolfpack holds on and Herb Sendek saves his job. Again. No. 2 CONNECTICUT vs. No. 15 Central Florida -- Cranky Jim Calhoun will have his team ready. CHICAGO Its just too hard not to pick Illinois to win this region. Remember what the home-court advantage did for Syracuse during the second weekend of the tournament in its run to the title in 2003? Elsewhere, look for Utah State to dump Arizona in the first round, paving Oklahoma States road to the regional final. The Illini and the Cowboys should meet in the regional final in Chicago. Dont overlook L.S.U. WHY GO AGAINST NO. 1? No. 1 ILLINOIS vs. No. 16 Fairleigh Dickinson -- The New York areas only entrant has little hope. No. 8 Texas vs. No. 9 NEVADA -- Nevada wins what could be the best first-round game. No. 5 Alabama vs. No. 12 WIS.-MILWAUKEE -- Bama will lose and turn attention to spring football. No. 4 BOSTON COLL. vs. No. 13 Pennsylvania -- Dont be tempted by the Quakers. Eagles win big. No. 6 L.S.U. vs. No. 11 Alabama-Birmingham -- L.S.U. wins a battle of size versus quickness. No. 3 Arizona vs. No. 14 UTAH STATE -- Utah States toughness will spark the biggest upset. No. 7 SOUTHERN ILLINOIS vs. No. 10 St. Marys -- Salukis will prevail in a well-played game. No. 2 OKLAHOMA STATE vs. No. 15 Southeastern Louisiana -- This game will get ugly quickly. ST. LOUIS READY FOR A REMATCH If this Final Four plays out, it will be a high-wattage affair in St. Louis. Illinois will have the edge in its game with Wake Forest. The Illini blitzed the Demon Deacons, 91-73, when the teams met on Dec. 1 in Champaign. Illinois will have a distinct home-court advantage in St. Louis, all the more so because it will not face the travel wear and tear of Wake, which must go through Albuquerque. In a rematch from last season, expect Connecticut to top Duke again in the other semifinal. Connecticuts frontcourt will again overpower Duke. ILLINIS CHARMED RUN In the title game, Illinois will close its charmed season with a close victory over Connecticut. The perimeter-oriented Illini should be able to run on the Huskies. Though thin on the frontline, Illinois has enough big bodies to bring off the bench and not let UConn overpower them. The point guard matchup of Dee Brown and Marcus Williams will be a classic. But look for the Illini to hound Williams and get just enough out of James Augustine inside to hold on for the victory.. The Kentucky Wildcats can take one step closer to an undefeated season Thursday night when they take on the West Virginia Mountaineers in the Sweet 16.. The Sweet 16 continues out west as well, with No. 1 Wisconsin playing No. 4 North Carolina, then.
Sharpen Your Pencils: Drawing the Way to Indy
ATLANTA Strongest of the regionals. When West Virginia is seeded sixth and George Washington, with only two losses, is No. 8, it is a sure sign of depth. No. 4 L.S.U. has the talent to make a deep run, but no team is hotter than No. 5 Syracuse. Still, look for No. 1 Duke and No. 2 Texas to line up in the regional final, with the Blue Devils advancing. A TOUGH TRIP TO INDY No. 1 Duke vs. No. 16 Southern At least the SWAC team did not have to go to the play-in game this season. No. 8 George Washington vs. No. 9 U.N.C. Wilmington A decent first-round draw for G.W.U. Not so for the second round. No. 5 Syracuse vs. No. 12 Texas A&M The Aggies are playing well, but Syracuse should be able to grind out one more. * No. 4 L.S.U. vs. No. 13 Iona The Gaels have what it takes to pull off an upset, but they received a poor draw. No. 6 West Virginia vs. No. 11 Southern Illinois A contrast of styles, but West Virginia, with its finesse, should squeak this out. No. 3 Iowa vs. No. 14 Northwestern State Iowa has too much toughness to lose in this one, but the Round of 16 is a reach. * No. 7 California vs. No. 10 N.C. State A decent Pac-10 team versus a decent A.C.C. team? Take the A.C.C. team every time. No. 2 Texas vs. No. 15 Pennsylvania It does not require an Ivy League degree to realize this is a bad matchup for Penn. THE TOP SEEDING Duke, with the senior Shelden Williams, left, gained a tough victory against Boston College in the A.C.C. final and appears to have come out of its slump. The lingering question: How much help will the Blue Devils get on calls from officials from outside the A.C.C.? Still, they will be formidable. UPSET SPECIAL Not easy to find upsets in a bracket this loaded. Look for IONA -- with four senior starters, including its star, Steve Burtt -- to play tough against L.S.U. The best upset choice here is the safe one, No. 10 NORTH CAROLINA STATE over No. 7 CALIFORNIA. The Wolfpacks offense can be tough. OAKLAND Opposite the toughest bracket, this would have to be considered the weakest. Usually the weakest No. 1 seeding, which is Memphis, gets a strong No. 2 in its bracket. But with U.C.L.A.s injuries and inconsistency, the Bruins may be the weakest No. 2. Look for the winner of the game between Kansas and Pittsburgh to reach the Final Four. SOFT AT THE TOP No. 1 Memphis vs. No. 16 Oral Roberts Oral Roberts can play well, but this assignment is just too much. No. 8 Arkansas vs. No. 9 Bucknell Bucknell is tournament-tested and has better coaching. Look for the Bison to advance. No. 5 Pittsburgh vs. No. 12 Kent State Pittsburgh should avenge a loss in the regional finals in 2002. No. 4 Kansas vs. No. 13 Bradley Tough draw for Kansas, but it has won 15 of 16. No. 6 Indiana vs. No. 11 San Diego State Do not put a deep run past Indiana Coach Mike Davis with this draw. No. 3 Gonzaga vs. No. 14 Xavier Gonzaga has a great draw; too bad it cant guard anyone. No. 7 Marquette vs. No. 10 Alabama Either of these teams could make a run, but look for Marquette to advance. No. 2 U.C.L.A. vs. No. 15 Belmont U.C.L.A. should cruise in the first round, but do not count on much more. THE TOP SEEDING Even with all Memphis has accomplished this season, it is hard to trust the Tigers. Coach John Calipari, left, has won only one N.C.A.A. tournament game since his arrival in 2000. That will change, and the talent is there, but it is hard to fathom Memphis reaching Indianapolis. UPSET SPECIAL The bracket will be quiet in the first round before all heck breaks loose. It is a weird bracket when the No. 4 and No. 5 seedings, Kansas and Pittsburgh, are the best teams, and they play in the second round. Do not look for Gonzaga to go too far. It is one-dimensional and defensively challenged. WASHINGTON This rivals Oakland for the weakest regional. None of the top 12 seedings won a conference tournament. No. 2 Tennessee appears tired, No. 3 North Carolina does not have the talent and No. 4 Illinois is not nearly as formidable as last year. Bottom line: Connecticut is still the most talented team in the country. GLIDE PATH FOR HUSKIES No. 1 Connecticut vs. No. 16 Albany This game should allow the Huskies to get back in sync. No. 8 Kentucky vs. No. 9 U.A.B. Look for the Blazers, with their suffocating style, to send the inconsistent Wildcats home. * No. 5 Washington vs. No. 12 Utah State A clash of styles will have the tortoise beating the hare as Utah State advances. No. 4 Illinois vs. No. 13 Air Force Princeton-style offense struggles when it is overwhelmed athletically; thats the case here. No. 6 Michigan State vs. No. 11 George Mason George Mason has no chance with guard Tony Skinn suspended for a punch. * No. 3 North Carolina vs. No. 14 Murray State Few teams are playing better than the Racers; they have won 14 of 15. * No. 7 Wichita State vs. No. 10 Seton Hall The table is set for a Shockers run to the Round of 16. No. 2 Tennessee vs. No. 15 Winthrop Winthrop defeated Marquette and played Auburn, Memphis and Alabama close. THE TOP SEEDING Even after its loss to Syracuse, Connecticut is still a no-brainer No. 1 seeding. Time will tell if the loss was a harbinger of an early exit. A wake-up call seems more likely. Look for Marcus Williams, left, and the Huskies to reach Indy. Coach Jim Calhoun will not let his team lose its focus again. UPSET SPECIAL Plenty of upset fodder in this regional, with Nate Harris, left, and UTAH STATE a good bet to beat Washington. Also look for WICHITA STATE to reach the Round of 16 and MURRAY STATE to play Carolina close. If a No. 15 is to beat a No. 2 this year, it will be WINTHROP. But do not count on that. MINNEAPOLIS With talented teams like No. 4 Boston College, No. 6 Oklahoma and No. 7 Georgetown lurking, picking the top-seeded teams is not worthwhile. Few teams are more experienced and better defensively than Boston College, which will defeat No. 1 Villanova in Minneapolis to advance to the Final Four. SEEDINGS DO NOT MATTER No. 1 Villanova vs. No. 16 Hampton or Monmouth Hampton and Monmouth should enjoy Dayton. It becomes ugly after that. No. 8 Arizona vs. No. 9 Wisconsin Look for the tougher Wisconsin Badgers to win this battle of underachievers. No. 5 Nevada vs. No. 12 Montana Nevada has a good draw, but its good fortune will run out in the second round. * No. 4 Boston College vs. No. 13 Pacific B.C. needs to be careful here; just ask Providence and Pittsburgh. * No. 6 Oklahoma vs. No. 11 Wisconsin-Milwaukee Bad matchup for Wisconsin-Milwaukee; the Sooners can run with it. * No. 3 Florida vs. No. 14 South Alabama Florida Coach Billy Donovan faces his former assistant John Pelphrey. No. 7 Georgetown vs. No. 10 Northern Iowa A Northern Iowa free fall means a Georgetown romp. No. 2 Ohio State vs. No. 15 Davidson Ohio State dominated down the stretch but lacks talent for a serious run. THE TOP SEEDING Villanovas talented four-guard offense, including Randy Foye, left, is a matchup nightmare because the Wildcats control the tempo and neutralize their opponents size with speed and toughness. But Allan Rays eye injury and the possibility of going cold from the outside leave too many doubts. UPSET SPECIAL A lot of potential but no slam dunks in the first round. Look for No. 3 FLORIDA to be pushed, No. 8 ARIZONA and Mustafa Shakur, left, to lose and No. 6 OKLAHOMA to have a stiff test. This year, more than ever, it will be said that the seedings dont matter; this bracket will be an example of why. INDIANAPOLIS NATIONAL SEMIFINALS Kansas has the blend of size and athleticism to surprise Duke in the semifinals and continue its improbable run to the title game. Look for old Big East rival Boston College to upset Connecticut in the other game. NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP GAME Few teams match Boston Colleges depth and experience. With Louis Hinnant playing as well as anyone, the Eagles can outlast the Jayhawks. * Upset Chance. Mens college basketball brackets discussed for NCAA tournament; chart; photos (M).
