Its Bicker, Bicker In New Odd Couple
NEIL SIMONS 1965 comedy, The Odd Couple, has become a classic American work of comic art. The story, based on the personalities of Mr. Simon and his brother, follows the problems faced by two unhappy roommates who discover that their conflicting personal habits interfere with everything from poker to sleep. One of them likes everything and everyone around him neat, clean and on time, while the other has not emptied an ashtray in months and has not even noticed the mess.
The Odd Couple Might Be Matthew Perrys First Successful Show Since Friends.

IS THIS COUPLE TOO ODD, OR NOT ODD ENOUGH?
You may well have forgotten that there was once an enterprising soul who translated a Charles Dickens novel into contemporary English in order to make it easier to read. As I remember it, when James Thurber was confronted with the results of this experiment, he announced with simple dignity, What we have here is an important step in the wrong direction. Now I dont suppose for a minute that Neil Simon has gone to the trouble of reworking his perfectly dandy comedy, The Odd Couple, in order to help us understand it. We always understood it just fine. When two divorced men decided to share an apartment, they began to behave with each other exactly as intolerably as they had with their wives. Right? The compulsively tidy Felix drove the sloblike Oscar nuts, and vice versa. We grasped it, we believed it, we laughed at it, we loved it. It didnt need help. In all probability, Mr. Simon has now decided to switch genders, turning Felix into Florence (Sally Struthers) and Oscar into Olive (Rita Moreno), because he figured the plot would function just as sturdily as it always had while the sex change would open up a whole new barrel of jokes. But it, too, is an important step in the wrong direction. Step? Its like strolling confidently off the rim of the Grand Canyon.

Odd Couple Was Entertaining
With reference to Leah D. Franks review of The Odd Couple [ Its Bicker, Bicker in New Odd Couple, Aug. 30 ] at the Studio Theater in Lindenhurst, I saw that show and cannot believe that Ms. Frank saw the same show that I did. I found the show to be very entertaining and the cast to be very capable, especially Kathy Coletti. If the constant laughter from the audience was any barometer, this show was definitely a big hit. As a longtime subscriber to several Broadhollow Theaters, I can report that this is not the first time Ms. Frank has given a Broadhollow production a review that was less than satisfactory. After all, we attend the theater to be entertained, and entertained we are. My advice is to sit back, relax and enjoy the show. BURT LEVINE Brentwood
The One Where Matthew Perry Makes (Another) Bad Sitcom
Its unfortunately obvious why CBS has chosen to revive The Odd Couple for television. In a changing media landscape, the network remains devoted to the traditional laugh-track sitcom, and theres nothing more traditional than Neil Simons dusty old.
Was He Or Wasnt He?
Long before Carson Kressley, before Will Truman, before Frasier and Niles selected their first perfectly elegant accessory, there was Felix Unger. A metrosexual before magazines had pinpointed his demographic, Felix was the ultimate neatnik noodge, the odder half of the Odd Couple -- played with a kind of brilliantly finicky melancholy by Tony Randall. Based on the 1965 Neil Simon play, The Odd Couple was the story of two divorced men, the slobby sportswriter Oscar (Jack Klugman) and the neurotic commercial photographer Felix (Mr. Randall), living as roommates in order to save for alimony. The original opening sequence featured a dryly funny voiceover: On Nov. 13, Felix Unger was asked to remove himself from his place of residence. That request came from his wife. Deep down, he knew she was right, but he also knew that someday he would return to her. While the shows first season in 1970 was stagy and stiff, with one camera and a laugh track, in its second year the series hit its stride, relying on a zingy comic chemistry between the two actors, whose easy rhythm elevated even the corniest jokes. Garry Marshall, the shows creator, began filming before a live audience, and the series developed a sophisticated vibe unusual for television at the time..
