To no one's surprise, Florida State's quarterback was awarded the Heisman.

What are the privileges you get for being a Heisman winner?

Do you get paid every year or just get to have the trophy?

Has anyone ever noticed that the Heisman winner hasnt won the National Title the year they won the Heisman, is that a jinx or they, "Heisman Fraternity", tell them to lose the game?

Answer: I'm blowing your theory straight out of the water. In 1996 Florida Gator QB Danny Wuerffel won both the Heisman and the National Championship. Danny is also the only Heisman winner to be coached by former Heisman winner, Steve Spurrier who won the award in 1966 as a QB with the Florida Gators.

One of the privileges of being a Heisman winner is that you get to vote for the winner for the rest of your life. Contrary to popular belief being a Heisman winner doesn't guarantee NFL stardom or being a number draft pick. Winning a Heisman trophy doesn't pay anything. They get paid from making it on a NFL team, sponsors or motivational speaking,etc

What was the lowest draft pick as a heisman winner?

Troy Smith is projected to be as low as a third round draft pick. Personally, I find this insane. Anyway, that seems like a really low draft for a almost guaranteed heisman winner. Does this have the potential of being the lowest draft pick for a heisman winner? Who has the lowest right now?

Answer: Jason White won the Heisman just a few years ago as the Oklahoma Jr. QB, and he went undrafted in the NFL. Although his was a case of an ijury wrecked career, there have been countless examples of Heisman winners doing nothing or next to nothing in the pros. The Heisman, in my opinion, does not go to the best college player, rather it goes to the best player on a winning team (which is usually loaded with other great players). Jerry Rice, for example, could never have won the Heisman playing for Mississippi Valley State. The award has become overhyped, and is a poor predicter of future success. That being said, there are several NFL teams struggling at QB right now, and not a super great class of QBs entering. I wouldn't be surprised to see Troy go in the first round, maybe mid to late round.

Um, sorry, but I didnt know that he won a Heisman Trophy. Is he like the first president that ever won the Heisman? Why does a Heisman candidate have to play for one of the top 5 teams in college football?

The Heisman trophy is supposed to go to the best PLAYER! (In theory !!!) Not the best player on the #1 team! I am a die hard SEC fan and I am still all for CJ Spiller from Clemson winning. He is clearly the best player (19 carries 230 yds 4 TDS in ACC championship) yet gets less consideration because he plays for a lower ranked squad even though he put them in the ACC championship.

Answer: i agree with the last post, heisman trophy winners usually play on great teams bc there are other players around him that make things easier on the canidate,

i really thought the winner of the heisman would come to surface today, i thought the winner of the Alabama/Florida game and either Ingram, or Tebow, depending on the winnging team and the best numbers, or McCoy from Texas. i thought whoever made the biggest statement would be the heisman, and clearly Ingram was the only player out of this group to make that statement.

hard to argue with Spiller from Clemson, or Gerhart from Standford either. and after watching Nebraska play i wouldnt argue with Suh being mentioned either

Because the heisman should be for the best player not the best or 2nd best offensive player. Suh is the best player in college football, he really proved how a d -lineman can change a game. Ingram disappeared at times unlike Suh who dominated every saturday. I like ingram but I think voters voted because hes playing in the NC game. What do you think?

Answer: Suh or Gerhart should have won it. Ingram just won it because his team is good and everyone pays attention to 'bama. The east coast couldn't even see gerhart because they were always asleep when the game started and no one thought to pay attention to nebraska.

How often is the Heisman winner the #1 pick in the draft?

i saw today that Mel Kipper has Suh going #1 yet he has no chance of the heisman.

Answer: There have been 15 winners who went #1 overall. The last to do it was Vinnie Testaverde back in 1986. Several of those guys who went #1 overall had great NFL careers and several ended up in the Hall of Fame. But since the late 1980's the trend has been that guys who win the Heisman are not very good pro prospects at all...in fact several are taken way deep in the draft (or not at all in a couple cases). The Heisman today generally is not a reflection of how a guy will do in the pros....in fact very often because of the "system" guys who are winning or guys who greatly benefit from the team instead of great individual talent that trend very likely continues. For instance...Tim tebow is an amazing college QB yet many NFL teams wont even add him to their draft board as a QB because they fear elements of his game wont add up to a pro career. Troy Smith is a prime example....the Ravens got him in the 5th round (all the armchair QBs in this forum who dont understand the different sytle of game required had him as the #1 overall pick...they were kinda close...not!). In fact it took the ravens one camp to realize that Smith would never be a starter in the NFL and quickly spent a 1st rounder on the widely heralded (sarcasm...only the real followers of the game knew who he was and why pro teams liked him) Joe Flacco. Whoever wins this years Heisman has no shot at being the #1 overall pick and in fact most of the favorites have no shot at even being a 1st round pick at all. And Kipper isnt the only one who has Suh as the early favorite to go #1 overall. Him, Russell Okung, Sam Bradford, Jake Locker and Jimmy Clausen are widely considered the top 5 picks at this early stage...the list will change as guys go through workouts.

Would they rather have LaMichael James(who got arrested before the season even started) win the award?

Besides that, isnt the Heisman supposed to be given to the BEST PLAYER in college football? Last I checked, that was Cam Newton.

Answer: Because Cam Newton was charged with burglary, larceny, obstruction of justice, and purchased a stolen laptop. Also, he accepted money from Auburn.

How much better would Toby Gerhart have to have been to get the Heisman over Mark Ingram?

Gerhart rushed for more yards and scored more TDs, how much better was he supposed to be to get the Heisman instead of Ingram?

Answer: Look at it this way: in 2004, J.J. Arrington rushed for 2018 yards (an average of about 160 per game) and 15 rushing TDs for Cal. He had at least a 100 yard game every game all season, averaged 7.0 yards per carry, and his rushing yardage total was the 10th best in the history of college football. Arrington didn't even get INVITED to the Heisman ceremony.

These days, you can only win the Heisman if you are from one of about 20 "Heisman Approved (trademark)" schools. Guys from schools outside the special club have little to no chance. Gerhart played a tougher schedule than Ingram, and he stepped up in the biggest games while Ingram mostly didn't. Gerhart had better stats in essentially every statistical category and was more important to his team than Ingram.

To end my rant and answer the question, I don't think any stats Gerhart could put up would have gotten him the victory. Even if he broke TD and yardage records, then the Heisman voters would just say that his performance was proof that the Pac-10 is weak and they would still would have given the award to Ingram.
