How can I remove files from my hard drive if the computer is no longer working?
The hard drive is a Hitachi Travelstar. The computer quit working but I am trying to retrieve the files from the hard drive. I have removed the hard drive from the laptop so just need to know how to fire up the hard drive.
Answer: Buy a hard drive enclosure & hook it up as an external drive thru a USB port on another computer.
You can keep it hooked up w/ the original files or once you get the files you need you can reformat & use it as a storage or back-up device.

How do I set my new hard drive as the default drive to save things to?
My "C" drive is full, so I bought a new Hard Drive today to save more files onto. I want to just download things to that hard drive without manually having to select that hard drive. How do I do that?
I am using Windows XP.
Answer: If you want your new hard drive to now be the main hard drive you would install it as the master. Thus you would have the rear jumpers set to the master position and your old hard drive would be the slave and you would set the jumpers on that hard drive to slave. When connecting the rear connectors place the end on the master hard drive and the connector further down on the slave.

Can drive mapping fix damaged hard drive sectors?
I executed drive mapping and canceled it in the middle of the process. This apparently resulted in damaged sectors on my hard drive. If I go through the same process to completion, is it possible the sectors would be repaired?
Answer: Canceling drive mapping should not have caused damage to your hard drive. Most likely, a table was erased or corrupted. By performing a low-level scan of the drive again, it should be able to find all the bad sectors and remap them to spare sectors. The bad sectors are bad; they can't be fixed, just mapped out so that the operating system can't use them or remapped to spare sectors. After the bad sectors have been remapped, format the drive and reinstall your software.
Unless the drive is about to experience a head crash or other malfunction, and all the spare sectors haven't been used up, it should report the full nominal capacity as being available after formatting.
To perform a low-level scan of your drive, you may need special software from the drive manufacturer, if it is a Parallel ATA or Serial ATA interface. If you have a SCSI drive and an Adaptec host adapter, the host adapter card will have a built-in low level scan that can be started from a menu that can be accessed during system boot.

What is the difference between a 4 wheel drive and an all wheel drive?
Four wheel drive is usually on a truck & all wheel drive is on a car-is that the difference and are they the same thing with one being solely for trucks (4wd) and the other being solely for cars (awd).
Answer: First, all these answers erroneously imply that with one or both these systems, all 4 wheels are driven. Unless there is a locked or limiting differential connecting the front and rear axles, and limited slip differentials at both ends, this is not the case.
Open differentials direct power to the wheel with the least traction, so even with 4WD, without limited slip differentials, if one wheel at each end is on slippery pavement, they will spin, and the others will just sit there. I had a Toyota FJ40 in Alaska, and I can testify that 4" of wet snow and a 4% grade will stop a 4WD vehicle without chains or limited slip differentials.
4WD is the older system, and originally involved an auxiliary transmission called a 'transfer case' that could be manually engaged when driving in low traction conditions, and which locked the front and rear axles together. It included a low range or 'granny gear' for allowing very high gear multiplication for creeping up and down steep grades and slow moving among obstacles off-road.
That system is what's on the true off-road vehicle (Jeep CJ, Toyota FJ40, Land Rover), along with high ground clearance, steep approach and departure angles (short overhangs to avoid getting hung up at front or rear), and extreme articulation (lots of wheel travel difference up and down between opposite wheels, to get over rocks and through deep holes).
AWD uses various technical tricks to automatically apportion power among the four wheels. Most of these tricks are electronic controls, but there are mechanical means as well (torque-sensing differentials that use the principal that a worm gear can drive but not be driven, to make a differential that cannot physically drive the wheel with the lesser traction, and viscous differentials that won't let one axle go more than a fixed amount faster than the other).
That system is used more often (but not only) on cars, with lower centers of gravity (so they are less likely to become unstable in emergency manuevers) and lower vehicle weight, for better performance and fuel economy.
Last word: both AWD and 4WD are more likely to get the inexperienced driver INTO trouble than out of it.

Different ways to drive for small care and big car?
Ive always drove small cars for my lessons, but when i decided to try out my moms car which is a mini-van it was much harder. Is there a different method of driving both cars?
Also if i drive mini van more often does that mean im going to crappier when driving a smaller car?
Answer: It's not only to do with size. All cars handle very differently.
When you first start driving, you get used to the driving instructor's car (or what ever you learnt in), and moving to a different car feels odd. It's just a matter of practice.
Bigger cars will tend to handle more sluggishly - there's more weight, and in a minivan in particular - the higher centre of gravity will give it more roll in the corners.
The hardest difference to get used to is front wheel drive to rear wheel drive. If you push a rear wheel drive too hard, it will react very differently to a front wheel drive.
The worst scenario would be accelerating out of a corner in the wet - if you put too much power down too quickly, the back will oversteer and you can end up spinning off.
So in terms of size - the driving style isn't much different (but go easy through the corners in a minivan). It's just practice - in a years time it'll all be second nature to you.

What drive is my car supposed to be in when i drive?
I drive a 2002 ford Taurus V6 automatic which Id 18mpg, and I feel like Im my car guzzles gas like crazy, there are 3 drives, a D in a highligted orange square another D and a 1. Any help please?
Answer: you should drive in either D and never 1, the orange highlighted D is the highest gear, it has the over drive which allows it to shift into the highest possible gear, typically this is the D you should use, the other D can be used but is usually used for pulling or carrying heavy loads, the 1 is a very low gear and used when stuck in mud or snow , it's very slow and should never be used unless needed.

What good quality hard drive is recommended for my PC?
I want to upgade my hard drive to one of a larger capacity, but im unsure of which type to go for. Ideally, im looking for a good quality and reliable 500GB hard drive, and not an external one as those tend to fail. Also, is it possible to incorporate the new 500GB hard drive with my existing hard drive? Any information will be greatly appreciated.
Answer: Western Digital Hard Drives are THE most reliable, period!
No other manufacturer comes close, they have been in the Hard Drive business for decades and are cool running, very-very reliable, well made & tough as old boots! You can't get better than Western Digital in my books they are No1 for reliability and many other aspects as well!
I have had one of their drives now for over TEN years and it has never failed, not even a hick-up, and is in use everyday and is a complete marvel by anybodies standards. OK, its on an old Pentium II 400Htz PC that is running one of the small Linux Operating Systems, but it still surfs the Internet as good as any other modern box of tricks can and it's virtually indestructible!
I never buy any others and have loads of them now running various things and have never had a single problem!
Read about Western Digital: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Western_Digital
(In case you were wondering, no I don't work for them, I just think they make top notch stuff!)
Take a look at their site to find out more detail and get the right drive for your needs: http://www.westerndigital.com/en/products/index.asp?cat=3
Just go for the best and get a Western Digital. Make sure you get the correct type, that is: IDE or SATA? ~ That's because they have different connections, although you can get conversion leads but it's easier to get the right one in the first place! So check you PC before ordering.

What drive train is best for driving in snow and ice?
What drive train is best in a car to drive in deep snow or on ice? AWD or 4X4?
Answer: Wow rear wheel drive for snow and ice-that person knows nothing about driving at all. That must be why they use front wheel drive cars for ice racing then.
AWD and 4x4 are essentially the same thing but still differ. Because all 4 tires in a full time AWD system are connected by a system of differentials, they are potentially very susceptible to torque reduction when a wheel loses traction. Without sophisticated traction control systems, they would become immobilized when any one of the four tires lost traction. A traditional part time 4WD system does not connect the front and rear via a differential, and therefore does not suffer any front/rear torque reduction - if a front tire loses traction, it does not reduce torque delivered to the rear tires, even without traction control systems.
Part time 4WD systems are therefore mechanically simpler, cheaper, and tougher than AWD systems, and inherently better at making use of available traction. Part time 4WD transfer cases are also usually equipped with a gear reduction setting that multiplies torque for greater power at lower speeds, a vital feature for vehicles that will see much off road use. The drawback is that because it lacks a center differential, a part time 4WD system can only be used in low traction situations where the wheels have the ability to slip as needed.
For these reasons, full time AWD is appropriate for improving on road handling and is seen on cars and car based crossover SUVs, while traditional part time 4WD systems without center differentials, or with locking center differentials, are better for heavy duty use, such as off roading or deep snow, and are commonly seen on trucks and truck based SUVs.
So in a car you'll want AWD vs. a truck where you want 4x4.

Computer stops reading my hard drive and cd drive then wont start, is it the motherboard?
I tried a new hard drive and new cd drive it will work for a little while then just turns off.
Answer: So you replaced the hard drive, still same problem, replaced the cd drive, still same problem. Sounds like a power issue or motherboard. If the computer doesn't turn on at all, its the power supply. If it does power on, but nothing shows up on screen, then its the motherboard. But it turns on, just a period of time, could be either or. What I would do is run a power supply test, you can buy the tool online, or just found someone one criagslist.com to help you out.

How much does driving in 4 wheel drive lower the MPG from driving in 2 wheel drive?
For a 2005 Jeep Liberty, does driving in 4 wheel drive cut its MPG in half, since twice as many wheels are operating? If not, about how much MPG is lost?
Actually, the four wheel drive is used for snow and ice.
Answer: A Liberty in 2WD gets about 15-18mpg highway... in 4WD it gets 10-14mpg, but in 4WD you should not try to exceed 45mph or you'll run the chance of damage the transfer case and transmission.
If you are using the 4WD for snow and ice, which is exactly when you should be using it, chances are you're only doing up to 35mph anyway, so it is possible to get higher-end mileage, 14mpg or a bit more, if you're easy on the gas and brakes, and are on relatively flat roads. Deep snow or mud creates more resistance, thus causes the engine to work harder, yielding lower mpg.
On a side-note, anyone with a selectable 4WD should drive a few miles (4-5) in 4WD mode every month, just to keep the transfer case in working order and to verify that everything works like it should... that way when you NEED it, you won't be stuck. Been there - done that...

How do I make my windows xp operate on a different drive That I have installed without reinstalling XP?
My hard drive space is low on my system drive but I have 2 other hard drives on the computer that are only being used for storage. Can I simply copy all of C drive onto F drive and then change my cmos to boot up from F drive?
Answer: If you move all your data (Non OS data) to the other drive, there will be enough space in the present drive. Keep in mind that you can move files that are not in use.. So most files from c:\Windows & c:\Program files will not move. Also some files in your profile too would be active & hence not movable. However almost all files from My Documents can be moved. Infact you can rt click on the folder & change its location to the F drive..
I wouldn't really advise you to format the current drive & move the OS to another drive simply because its lot of work. You need to change jumpers on the drives to make the new ne master,, then load OS , then load the Anti Virus, The Anti Spyware, get ALL of windows updates...
Better to just move your movies/pics/songs/other user data to the new drive & let it be.

How much longer should I drive at a regular course versus a driving range?
A new ball should drive longer then a driving range ball, right? I usually hit between 200-230 yards at a driving range before my ball his the ground. I am using the same swing and power I would at a golf course. Also, by the way, Im a total newbie. I have only been going to the driving range for 2 months.
Answer: Depending on how warm it is and how hard the ground is. You should probably be hitting 240-250 give or take a few yards because the ball roles more on the fairway. If you live somewhere warm you could easily hit 260 -270. I drive 230 at the range and drive about 250 on the course.
