Richard Matheson : Latest News, Information, Answers and Websites

What are some good horror/ science fiction novels?

I enjoy Stephen King (especially "Carrie", "The Dead Zone", and "Salems Lot"). I also enjoy H.P. Lovecraft (namely "The Statement of Randolph Carter"). Also Shirley Jacksons "The Haunting of Hill House". But by far my favorite is Richard Mathesons "I Am Legend". I truly just would like some good books to read. (I have already read most of the true classics such as "Dracula", "Dr Jekyl and Mr Hyde", and "Frankenstein"). Thank you for any suggestions.

Answer: You, my friend, are one of those rare people these days with an excellent taste in books, an honest appreciation for true literature, haha!
Here are some suggestions:

Hell House, by Richard Matheson (as you can tell, from "I Am Legend," Matheson is himself a legend. This book was noticeably inspired by "The Haunting of Hill House," and though Matheson doesn't write prose like Jackson, his story isn't detracted from that at all. This book is very, very disturbing on both suggestive and blatant levels, and it's extremely smart. Matheson knows what he's talking about when he writes a book, and shows it here like he did in "I Am Legend," and it's one hell of a terrifying book)

The Ruins, by Scott Smith (Stephen King called this the greatest horror novel of the new century, and though that is arguable, it's certainly partly true. VERY disturbing, chilling, and scary, it's an excellent book from an author who I wish would write more because this book is amazing, as is his first one, "A Simple Plan," thought that's a thriller)

Ghost Story, by Peter Straub (this, I think, is a great book for anyone who loves and appreciates true horror. It's hard to explain why, but Peter Straub is an author you would do well to look into, and this book is a perfect start. Eerie, dark, gothic, and genuinely scary, it really is a classic ghost story, but it's also so much more than that)

Anansi Boys, by Neil Gaiman (this is another author I think you might like. You might recognize titles such as "Stardust" or "Coraline" by him. This one is sad, it's hilarious, it's dark, it's weird...and simply out there, as is Gaiman's style)

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, by Seth Grahame-Smith (I know what you're thinking. You actually might be like me, who thinks the movie looks amazing in spite of the outrageous premise and simple idea of it, but either way...it IS amazing. This book is witty, it's smart, historically accurate for the most part--in spite of the fact that it's an alterna-fantasy-history story--and very violent, dark, and definitely badass. And reading the book will give you an advantage over any of your friends who just see the movie and such. It's an awesome book)

You may also love to start on Stephen King's Dark Tower series. It's a huge commitment, but the books are just...impossible to describe, really. I could suggest any book by Stephen King, and one of the many things that sets him apart from other authors, especially horror novelists, is The Dark Tower series.

Cheers!

What is the scariest book ever written?

Obviously an opinion. Just curious what some of the creepiest or scariest books youve ever read are. I havent found anything that scares me, but more intrigued me. I must say though, Hell House by Richard Matheson and The Last Victim by Jason Moss (non fiction I know, but his story is pretty messed up) are pretty creepy. Also anything by Lovecraft Ive read tends to be bizarre and twisted. Just curious for other opinions as well as suggestions for some good reads.

What kind of gun(s) did Robert Neville have in the book I Am Legend?

Pretty straightforward. What kind of gun (or guns) did Robert Neville have in the 1954 book I Am Legend, by Richard Matheson? I recall he had at least one firearm that he kept, but I dont remember if it was ever stated what model it was. I lost the book, and if anyone knows, I would appreciate an answer.

Answer: It doesn't state the model. "..he pulled one of his pistols out of the bureau drawer.."

What are your favorite apocalyptic/post-apocalyptic fiction novels?

Eg: end of the world, last human alive kind of stuff?

My vote goes for I am Legend by Richard Matheson, possibly the only book I could read over and over again and still enjoy it.

Answer: I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream by Harlan Ellison is like that. It isn't a novel, but a short story. It is an amazing read.

I also hear The Road is good, but I haven't read it.

In what year is the book i Am legend take place?

In what year is it in the book i Am legend(novel) by Richard Matheson take place ?

Answer: No year is ever given. It was written in 1954, and you can tell from some context clues that it isn't modern, one of the main ones being that he plays music on a record player which haven't been really used since the 80's. When reading it, I imagined it to be around 1975, but in the author's mind, it was likely earlier than that.

Whats the difference between horror and terror?

I borrowed two Richard Matheson short story collections: one is subtitled Terror Tales, the other Horror Tales. Doesnt seem to be that much of a difference.

Answer: Horror suggests an element of revulsion that needn't be present in terror. Horror could be showing somebody being murdered with a chain saw. Terror would be somebody anticipating being murdered by a chain saw.

Richard Matheson - IMDb

Richard Matheson, Writer: Twilight Zone: The Movie. Richard Matheson has written novels and short stories, as well as screenplays for both film and television.

What would you think if a thirteen year old read these authors?

Bram Stoker
Mary Shelley
Stephen King
Richard Matheson
Victor Hugo
Dan Brown
Robert Louis Stevenson
Edgar Allen Poe
John Steinbeck

Also, I have managed to go a full year without reading any modern books.
Ill read anything, but I prefer the dark and dreary.
Ive been wanting to read Lovecraft for quite some time now, but I cant find him in any of the bookstores around me.
My reading level (as tested by my school) is college level, so I think I can handle a lot of harder stuff.

Answer: Other than Stevenson, that is nearly the same reading list I had as a wee 13 year old:)

I think Lovecraft is entirely over rated, but that's just me...

What are some of the scariest horror novels ever?

I mean like something along the lines of Richard Mathesons "Hell House" or Stephen Kings "The Shining". Just something that is blatantly terrifying like that. I like getting scared.

Answer: I'm firstly impressed with you even mentioning Richard Matheson, or his amazing book, "Hell House." I guess there's still hope for humanity in wake of Twilight or The Hunger Games! Haha! Here are my suggestions for you:

The Exorcist, by William Peter Blatty (I trust you've seen the movie, and if you have, you need to read this book. If you haven't, you need to read this book. It's written with simple elegance, it's horrifying and disturbing very blatantly but psychologically as well, as is the case with "Hell House," and it's just...incredible. A true horror classic!)

The Ruins, by Scott Smith (Stephen King himself called this the best horror novel of the new century, and with good reason. Gory, disturbing, chilling and terrifying, it's a nearly incomparable horror novel of its level from an author who should write more because I want to read more!)

Ghost Story, by Peter Straub (this book has one of the eeriest atmospheres I think I've ever come across in a book. It's dark, it's uncomfortable and unsettling, and it's extremely scary in so many ways. It's an interesting take on the traditional idea of a ghost story, only it blooms into something much darker, much more scary and also somehow believable. It's an awesome horror story, one all true horror fans should at some point read)

IT, by Stephen King (you need to have something special about you to read this book and appreciate it for what it is. This is the best book I have ever read and probably ever will, personally, and it's also probably the scariest. You have to be a patient reader, because not all of it is exactly pedal to the medal, but it's not supposed to be--this book is life, and there's little more I can say than that. It's nauseating, it's disturbing, it might even leave you in trembling fits like it did to me, more than once. Creepy, eerie, gory, in-your-face, and strange and increasingly weird and terrifying, this book has everything, and much more than just horror. It creates a picture so real that it IS real, and that helps it all the more with how terrifying it is. The characters are humans, the setting is...well, in many ways, it's perfect, but it's not for everyone)

The Tommyknockers, by Stephen King (though it's not known as his best or anyone's favorite, I absolutely loved it, and what it really did was scare me. It just builds up, creates this weird, dark, haunting air around it, and the result is one of King's strangest works, but it's also very, very scary)

Desperation, by Stephen King (this one is hard to explain. The antagonist is so evil and so senseless that I was actually laughing aloud at some parts, except it was the type of laugh that you do when you see or read something extremely sadistic and flat out wrong. It's a violent book, and it's also sad and touching in some ways, and generally scary. Not terrifying, but definitely worth the read for the odd masterpiece that it is)

These are some of the best I've got! I hope they are to your liking!
Cheers!

Who is a favorite author of yours that you wish more people would read?

One of my absolute favorites is Richard Matheson... and no one seems to read him. Hes inspired some of the most well known authors that are around right now [including Stephen King] but I feel like no one knows who he is.

Do you have any authors you feel like that with?

Answer: I am a fan of Brontes and I always find Anne's work neglected. "Agnes Grace" is not very distinguished but "The tenant of the wildfell hall" has not find it's true merit. She is mostly known as the less successful sister, although "The tenant of the wildfell hall" had the most hostile reviews than either Jane Eyre or Wuthering heights because it shocked with it truthful and realistic delineation of alcoholism and abuse inside a household which made her heroine desert her wretch of a husband.

what is your opinion on this literary argument?

My class received an assignment to research a successful author, I was debating between Stephen King and Richard Matheson, out of nowhere, the girl sitting next to me starts arguing that Stephenie Meyer is a better author than Stephen King and this carries on for about ten minutes until I give up and realize this is hopeless.

Both the girl and I are 13.

What are your opinions?
I ended up choosing Matheson because I agree that King is mediocre, he has his good books, but a lot are just horrible.

Answer: I don't know about Stephanie Meyer, never read it, but you're right about Steven King. Plenty of great moments but a whole lot of outright stupidity mixed in there as well.

14 hours ago ... The award-winning sci-fi author and screenwriter has died.

What are your top 3 favorite short stories, and who are they by?

Mine are
1. The Man in the Black Suit - Stephen King
2. The Road Virus Heads North - Stephen King
3. Dying Room Only - Richard Matheson

Im looking for some good ones, especially in the horror or suspense categories. So what are your favorites?

Answer: The Lottery - ?
All That You Loved Will Be Carried Away - King
LT's Theory of Pets - King

What I find funny is that people say King's short stories are getting worse and worse, yet when people pick which are their favorites, they always tend to come from Everything's Eventual. Ever notice that? BTW, those are in no specific order.

Are there any books that you read make a point to read cover to cover, periodically?

About every 4 years I read Richard Bachs "Illusions, The Adventures of a Reluctant Messiah" and Richard Mathesons "I Am Legend". Not because I forgot what they are about, but because they are fascinating to me.

Each of these, I have read at least 7 times in my 47 years of life.
Oh, Yeah! And George Orwells "Animal Farm" at least 5 times.

Answer: ~How can you not start reading Fountainhead (Ayn Rand) or One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (Ken Kesey) again as soon as you finish. Most anything by Mark Twain deserves another go every couple years or so. The Jungle and The Octopus (Upton Sinclair) deserve a few passes. If plays count, add anything by Shaw, Shakespeare, Ibsen, and Odets to the list. There are others, of course, but this come to mind first.

A good book is like a good LP (you're 47 - you know what they are). It will wear out before you tire of it. And you find something new each time out.
