Some Old Saws Rehoned, by STEVE MARTIN
In The Zigzag Woman, a genial barfly remembers the wife who left him 21 years earlier. She was a termagant, but the man continues to hope that she will suddenly appear one day, full of repentance, to sit beside him in a bar or a theater or maybe even a laundromat. He always keeps a seat ready for her. She issued a declaration of independence every time she entered the room, he remembers with pride. Her hair was practically edible.
Steve Martin, In Revision
Steve Martin tells a joke. Its a painful moment. This joke arrives so unexpectedly -- and in the middle of a lunch that, while cordial, has hardly been a picnic -- that its almost inexplicable. He is a forbidding man, a man without a molecule out of place, a person capable of composure even when exhausted. Martin got off a plane this morning from Las Vegas, where he was advising a casino interested in creating a new sort of circus extravaganza. And now he sits almost gloomily at the Four Seasons in Beverly Hills, fully composed save for a repeated nervous gesture: quick, furtive swipes of Chapstick over his lips. Never mind the joke itself, something about the sex act. Lets just note that the joke triggers an awkward silence. Its the one time when he seems to be doing whats expected of him instead of what he wants. These days, what Steve Martin wants is to write. The comic who packed 20,000-seat arenas in the 1970s and who orbited more catch phrases than Mike Myers and Chris Rock combined now considers himself more a writer than a performer. Certainly the greatest rewards personally Ive been getting are from writing, he says over lunch. But I love -- I love a. Its as if hes reconsidering what he enjoys about being Steve Martin in 1999. I still like acting. I love comedy, but its hard. Actings not hard, but comedy is.. SCREEN: LONELY GUY, STARRING STEVE MARTIN
Bruce Jay Friedmans Lonely Guys Book of Life didnt have any plot to speak of. The film version doesnt either, though not for lack of trying. If you can get past the movies aimlessness and its visual drabness, it has its share of isolated laughs. Steve Martin fits right in to the sad- sack role of the title, playing a dateless greeting-card writer who cant believe his ill fortune. Fortunately, he finds someone to talk to. At the beginning of The Lonely Guy, which opened yesterday at the Rivoli and other theaters, Mr. Martins Larry comes home to find his girlfriend in bed with another man. Hes perfectly willing to ignore this (This your cigar here, honey? he asks innocently), but she is not. Larry is sent packing, and given the garbage to take out with him. He winds up on a park bench holding all his meager possessions. There, he is joined by another lonely guy named Warren (Charles Grodin), who shows him the ropes.
