Harper Lee Writes Again Ever since Harper Lees novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, was published in 1960 and went on to sell 2.5 million copies in its first year and win the Pulitzer Prize, the author has led a low-profile life. Ms. Lee, now 80, has published virtually nothing of significance since then except a 1983 book review. But now she has written something for publication. It is a letter for O, the Oprah Winfrey magazine, about how she became a reader as a child in a rural, Depression-era Alabama town, The Associated Press reported. In the magazines July special summer reading issue, Ms. Lee recalls becoming a reader before she entered first grade. Older sisters and a brother read to her; her mother read her a story a day; her father read her newspaper articles. Then, of course, it was Uncle Wiggily at bedtime, Ms. Lee writes of the popular old-time childrens character, right. She notes that books were scarce in the 1930s in the town, Monroeville, where she still lives part time; and the scarcity of books in a town without movies and parks made them a special treasure. Now, she writes, 75 years later in an abundant society where people have laptops, cellphones, iPods and minds like empty rooms, I still plod along with books. Axl Rose Arrested in Stockholm Axl Rose, below, the Guns N Roses frontman, was arrested yesterday and accused of biting a security guard in the leg after a night of partying that followed a concert in the Globe Arena in Stockholm, The Associated Press reported. He was deemed too intoxicated to be questioned right away, she said. The origin of the incident was unclear, but Swedish newspapers said the guard had tried to intervene when Mr. Rose began to argue with a woman in the hotel lobby. The Web site of the newspaper Aftonbladet (aftonbladet.se) quoted Fredrik Nylen, a police officer, as saying that Mr. Rose acted aggressively toward the police and had to be handcuffed and restrained. Officer Nylen said, He kept a high profile, so to speak. Long Lives the Mockingbird
IN Monroeville, Ala., where Harper Lee and Truman Capote once raced by Boo Radleys house as children, the 1903 courthouse still rises in the square, its bell tower, now electrified, chiming the hours. After a new courthouse was built in the 1960s, this one was marked for demolition. But citizens who prized the landmark and its role in To Kill a Mockingbird -- as a fictional setting of Harper Lees novel and the model for the courtroom in the movie of the same name -- managed to preserve it. The building also serves as a stage. For the past eight years, on several weekends every spring, Christopher Sergels theatrical adaptation of To Kill a Mockingbird has unfolded on the courthouse lawn. When I attended one of this seasons performances, the audience included not just local families and tourists but others who had come to town for a symposium on Alabama writers. As real mockingbirds jabbered in the pecan trees and recorded ones echoed from loudspeakers, we were all sent back to the summer of 1935:.
