A Different Kind of Showdown for Bob Barker
Though the real-life Bob Barker is better known for his affability and gentleness toward people with no conception of what things cost, a ship named for Mr. Barker, the longtime Price Is Right host, had its first confrontation with whalers on Tuesday, The Associated Press reported. The Bob Barker, a 1,200-ton vessel operated by the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, the activist group featured on the Animal Planet series Whale Wars, was among the ships that tried to stop a Japanese whaling mission in waters near Antarctica. Mr. Barker, 86, donated the money for his namesake ship after meeting the Sea Shepherd founder Paul Watson through a fellow animal advocate. He said he thought he could put the Japanese whaling fleet out of business if he had $5 million, Mr. Barker told The A.P. I said, I think you do have the skills to do that, and I have $5 million, so lets get it on. Sea Shepherd describes itself as an anti-poaching organization, and says it enforces the United Nations World Charter for Nature by intervening in whaling missions.. Low Comedy Disguising Lofty Thoughts About Art
The place is Venice in the late 16th century, shortly after the Battle of Lepanto, in which the navies of Venice and its European allies triumphed over the Ottoman Empire. The future of the Mediterranean as a Christian sea has been assured. To celebrate this historic event, Venice has commissioned its most talented and fiercely independent painter, Galactia, to depict the battle on a canvas measuring 1,000 square feet. It is to be Renaissance Venices epic, a majestic equivalent to Victory at Sea. Such commissions were not casually handed out. It was hoped the painting would be a work of art but, more important, that it would be an appropriate civic monument, a representation not only of Christs power and glory, but also of Venices, with attention paid to its own heroic native sons. As Galactia worked at her commission, the question arose as to whether she would realize her great opportunity or blow it.

I will be 83 years old on Dec. 12, he said, and Ive decided to retire while Im still young. Scott Fitzgeralds Great Gatsby, has been discovered and will appear today in an online literary journal, The Associated Press reported. The previously unpublished poem Ennui, written by Miss Plath, below, in 1955 during her senior year at Smith College, was found by Anna Journey, a graduate student in creative writing at Virginia Commonwealth University, while researching the Plath archives at Indiana University. Ms. Journey said the sonnet, in the form of two original typed scripts with some handwritten notes, is related to the French expression lennui (boredom), which Miss Plath had written in her copy of The Great Gatsby next to the passage in which Daisy Buchanan, the woman Gatsby desires, complains, Ive been everywhere and seen everything and done everything. Ms. Journey said of Miss Plath (1932-63), She was riffing off of Fitzgeralds passages. Beginning with the lines Tea leaves thwart those who court catastrophe/designing futures where nothing will occur, the poem is featured in Blackbird, published online (blackbird.vcu.edu) by the English department of Virginia Commonwealth University and New Virginia Review. Gregory Donovan, an English professor at the university and co-editor of Blackbird, said the poem poked fun at people who consult tea leaves or psychics in the hope of foretelling disasters while real life itself is as dramatic and romantic as a fairy tale. Using a spiral notebook, the ailing Mr. Capote wrote the 14-page memoir after asking Ms. Carson what she wanted for her birthday. Truman, she said, I just want you to write. If youre writing, Im happy. The result was Remembering Willa Cather, a recollection of his first chance meeting with Miss Cather when he was a teenager. The memoir, with an estimated sale price of $20,000 to $30,000, appears in the November issue of Vanity Fair. Other items in the auction include the tuxedo Mr. Capote wore to his famous Black and White Ball, his passport and a signed Richard Avedon portrait. Arrests Over Notebook Of Hank Williams The disappearance of a 59-year-old notebook belonging to the country music legend Hank Williams, left, containing unpublished song lyrics and other writings and valued by experts at as much as $250,000, has led to the arrest of two people by the Nashville police, The Associated Press reported. WATCHING Brewster McCloud at a Texas drive-in blew my teenage mind during the summer of 71. Living on the wrong side of the tracks (the dry part of town) in South Dallas, a late Saturday night could only mean a double or triple bill at the Astro Drive-In. We threw the lawn chairs in the trunk of the car, as well as a teenager or two, and arrived just before dusk to see the main feature. The second and third movies were repeats of past drive-in favorites, like Kellys Heroes, which played there so often Im convinced the theater must have held on to the print for years and never returned it. Brewster McCloud was highly anticipated in Texas because it was the first movie made in the Astrodome, that great modern Texas landmark. The trailer also promised some action, some comedy, a little sex and a slam-bang ending. Brewster McCloud had all that, but oh, so much more.. *Mike Barker discusses why he likes Brewster McCloud as a summer movie; photo (M)

Secret List Sets Off St. Patricks Parade Squabble
The nerve center for one of the largest and most famous parades in the world is a small, suffocating office on Woodhaven Boulevard in Queens, across the street from a cemetery. There, amid the stacks of green-lettered stationery and the mounds of detritus from parades past, can be found one James P. Barker, the executive secretary-director of the St. Patricks Day Parade and Celebration Committee. Mr. Barker is a rumpled, compact man who keeps a St. Patricks pin on his blue suits lapel, and a balm stick handy to run across parched lips. And while he modestly demurs, Mr. Barker is widely regarded as the Bob Fosse of the carefully choreographed event that consumes Midtown Manhattan with tin whistles, step dancers and some two million spectators on that invariably brisk March 17 morning.. Article discusses points of dispute for Manhattans St Patricks Day parade, which is organized by James P Barker, executive secretary-director of St Patricks Day Parade and Celebration Committee; contentious issues range from publication of list showing order of marchers to selection of Grand Marshal to political disputes with New Yorks two weekly newspapers, Irish Echo and Irish Voice; photo (M)
NEW YORK IN THE THIRTIES.
I was very much interested in reading in your paper of June 25, 1899, the article, An Old New York Fireman, Jimmie Mackey, who used to run with No. 5 Engine, and desire to know if any one is living who remembers New York in the thirties. I was particularly interested, because I, too, ran with No. 5, not as a fireman, but as a boy.. Barker, Abraham; Letter to Times on In the Thirties
