Tennis - ATP World Tour - Federer: No Need To Panic

What do you do after something like this?” It's a question Roger Federer posed on Wednesday after being ousted by Sergiy Stakhovsky in the second round of Wimbledon.

SPORTS OF THE TIMES; The Davis Cup and the Greatest Generation

Their moment to collectively shine did not simply materialize. The opportunity to define their comparatively under-credentialed generation of American mens tennis did not present itself like some slick marketing campaign. Luck of the draw helped, as it invariably does in Davis Cup. But think of the United States chance to win one for the first - Harvey Araton Sports of The Times column discusses Davis Cup, where US will try to win first title in 12 years (M) - E-mail: hjaraton@nytimes.com - By HARVEY ARATON

Why did Roger Federer have Gwen Stefani in his players box? What has she got to do with tennis?

I think Federer had his mind 100% on the final, Gwen Stefani has nothing to do with tennis. Tennis is a business and he should have had his mind on the job. Not worring about having celebrities in his box.

Answer: gwen stefani is an american and her husband is a british tennis freak! she looked very bored and hardly clapped, and her husband was hard out into the match! i have a feeling that their marriage wont last long because their interest seem a bit different! she was probably disappointed that she was not the main attraction! u know these woman celebrities have massive egos thinking the world revolves around them! its just how they are born i guess! i like roger but im so glad rafa nadal won this and ended the dominance of federer finally, im sure players have been waiting for this moment for years!

Who would you rather see play Federer in the quarters Karlovic or Verdasco?

I would rather Verdasco play Federer even though Federer would beat them both anyway cause hes in great form.
He played fantastic tennis today against Soderling! Only hit 8 unforced errors and 23 aces! Cmon Federer you can do iy!

Answer: I would rather see Verdasco play Federer because it would see them have long tough rallies. I want to see their forehands battling it out. With Karlovic, games and points are going to be quick, not the grinding I like to watch.

Why do Federer have more fans and win more titles than Nadal although he is weaker?

All people know that a healthy Nadal can beat Federer in every single game. Why do the stronger one always encounter injuries and have bad fate? Is it because federer is luckier and have less injuries? This is such a sad story. Nadal is stronger but Federer is recognised as the best player just merely because Federer is more lucky.

Answer: its not bad fate that brings injuries, its bad preparation.
nadal used to play too many tournaments and push his body too far. this is why he became injured.
federer knows how to look after his body and how to pace himself through the years tournaments so he doesn't get injured.
federer has actually been unlucky, he has kept his body in great shape for years on end but has gotten unavoidable illnesses like mono and lung infection etc. nadal and other players get physical injuries from not knowing how to take care of their bodies rather than being unlucky.

Tennis - ATP World Tour - Federer: "I Like Tough Draws"

Roger Federer admitted at The Championships on Sunday that he is “ready for the challenge” of potentially needing to beat Rafael Nadal, Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic if he is to retain his Wimbledon title.

Federer dropped a set to Ferrero and had a hard time in the first set.Is he human after all?

Please ,anybody watching the game give your opinion of how Federer looks to you. Is he at the top of his form?
I am rooting for Ferrero but I cant rteally believe he can win.

Answer: Federer IS human. He makes mistakes. Ferrrero was playing at the top of his game and Roger is a little rusty after a 5-day vacation. :)

BBC Sport - Roger Federer suffers earliest Wimbledon exit since 2002

9 hours ago ... Defending champion Roger Federer loses to world number 116 Sergiy Stakhovsky in the second round at Wimbledon.

Why do people question Roger Federers ability by saying the competition is inferior?

I think it is grossly unfair to say that Federer wouldnt even crack the top-10 if he played against Lendl, Becker, Sampras, Agassi, Connors et al in their primes. Yes, there were more multiple grand slam winners then and it was tough to predict who would win an event when they all competed together, but doesnt that just mean Federer is just so far ahead of the rest?

Look at it this way, if Federer wasnt around, Nadal would have 2 Wimbledons to go with his French title, Djokovic would have had his breakthrough this year and Andy Roddick, Lleyton Hewitt and Marat Safin would be multiple slam champions. Heck, even Marcos Baghdatis would be a slam champion. And you know what, everybody would say it was a new golden age in tennis with competition so tough it is difficult to predict who would win a tournament.

So, why not give the man his due. Federer is the best tennis player now and maybe ever. Good players come and go, but legends will remain indelible.

Answer: i concur with you 110% mate

problem here being...fedex is getting too far away from the pack...hence the crowd has to find to "humanize" roger federer...

his achievements in the tennis world has far superceeded the expectations of the public and the performance of any past player...

since there is no possible way to put him on par with any current player....the only way to make fedex sound more human is to pit him against great players of the past...which he cant possibly play against...so the winner can never be determined...

there is no doubt...that fedex is a living legend...a living legend which is still writing history as we speak...he's been breaking tennis records as it were 2nd nature to him...

cheers mate...fedex-a living breathing legend...in the world of tennis

How does Roger Federer put so much spin on his forehand?

How does he put so much spin with his modified eastern grip (halfway between an eastern and semi-western grip) compared or just like guys like Nadal and all the other players that use extreme grips. I heard that Federers spin is the second best to Nadals and his grip is conservative than Nadals. I tried Federers grip when I was playing today. It felt great hitting hard, flat, and a bit consistent at the same time! I just want to know how he induces so much spin so I can learn it also! Thanks!

Answer: If you had the opportunity to catch the The Federer Express at the Indian Wells tournament, you might have noticed that his footwork and body positioning are impeccable. His shoulders are always squared up so that he can unleash that powerful forehand in any direction, with extreme precision and at the last possible moment . . . none but the righteous can read it!

It's not the grip, too many have tried to xerox it. It's not the wrist, no it barely moves until the end of the stroke . . . it's his cool, calm, total body movement and classic preparation. Amazing.

Federer got a favourable draw and Nadal got the tougher one, what will happen?

Paradoxically dont you think easy draw will not be that good for Federer as he will be shocked to get a solid opponent who comes out from the other half of the draw in the final?

The best prediction will surely earn 10 great points.

Answer: i think it will be a federer/nadal finals again...
nadal, who can play very long on courts can still handle the tougher draw...
federer, who is getting older can be favorable for him not handling tougher opponents.

Why is Federer Playing the unicef open and not aegon?

Every big player prepares for wimbledon by playing the aegon championships. Why has Federer chosen to play unicef? Unicef has low ranked players unlike aegon which has like all the top 5 players. Is Federer just wanting easy ranking poionts?

Answer: Federer always plays in Halle before Wimbledon, unless he chooses not to play at all. He's won five tournaments there. I don't think it really has to do with the geographical location, but he may prefer it precisely because it's a much more low-key tournament with a less daunting group of players.

It's definitely not about ranking points, because if that's what Federer was after, he would not skip certain Masters Series events. For most of the past five years, he's played fewer tournaments than anyone else inside the top 100, and in the last year he's only played 19 -- tied for second fewest. If he really wanted ranking points, he would just play more events. But when you're winning Grand Slams, the points you get out of tournaments like Halle and Queen's Club are chump change.

My guess is that he likes to make the transition to grass in a low-pressure environment, because he believes that once he gets going and finds a rhythm in his game, it doesn't matter whom he plays against. Under the intense media glare in Britain and playing with so many other stars alongside him in a best-of-three set format gives him the least comfortable way to prepare for Wimbledon. Not to mention, the people organizing the tournament at Halle must move heaven and earth to accommodate his wishes (like on what days and at what time he wants to play) because he's by FAR the biggest star in the field and the strongest attraction for people who buy tickets.

Roger Federer falls to Sergiy Stakhovsky in second round of ...

WIMBLEDON, England — The 116th-ranked Sergiy Stakhovsky stunned defending champion and seven-time winner Roger Federer 6-7 (5), 7-6 (5), 7-5, 7-6 (5) in the second round, capping a wild day at Wimbledon.

How many Grand Slams will Federer and Nadal each win in their career?

Federer is 27 years old and hes won 13. He won his first Grand Slam in 2003.
Nadal is 22 years old and has won 6. He won his first Grand Slam in 2005.

Answer: Federer will win 3 slams in regular basis. He has about 7 years left because His style is technique based. so, he can last longer than other players. so, he will win about 15 more slams. Nadal isn't really great on grass and hard court. He will win french on regular basis. He has about10 years left but, His style is too physical. He won't last long. so, I think Nadal has about 3 years left. therefore, He will win about 4 more slams. Federer will end up having about 30(most likely 29 though) slams and Nadal will end up having 10slams

Murray destroyed him fair and square!

How can nadal counter the attacking style and net game of federer on grass?

I have watched their wimbledon match last year. I have noticed that federer pressures nadal and keeps him off balance when he attacks the net and do those various volleys which produces easy points for roger. I know for sure this will be the same tactic that federer will use in their match.

Answer: what gives nadal the advantage on clay , is that the court is not as fast as grass or hard courts , he reaches for the ball and hit it with a top spin with his forehand that most off does not depend on speed other than high spinning , thats the most shot he got , and its really heavy on the other player to hit back , its not as easy as we watch it , and he recently developed a good high speed backhand shot , but when it comes to grass , the most effective shots are flat , and with a brilliant net player like federer , nadal gotta do something about his forehand ,
another thing is that rafa's shot placement is near the middle of the court rather than the base line , it may got advantage on clay as the ball take a high attitude after bouncing , but on grass it won't help him that much
after all every player got his own techniques , hoping rafa would become on grass as good as he is or clay

How can Roger Federer still be considered the GOAT when he is constantly being beaten by Nadal?

All the other great players such as Sampras, Laver, and Bjorn were never DOMINATED by another player in their era. And if Federer is considered to be the greatest of all time, shouldnt Nadal also be taken into consideration since he has a winning record over Roger?
Im just wondering why some people keep saying Nadal isnt as dominant when you take clay out of the equation ( why would you dismiss that as irrelevant?) thats like saying he would be even more dominant if you would take hard courts out of the equation for Federer

Answer: First of all let me say that I am a HUGE Roger Federer fan. I think he is one of the best things sports have to offer. Not only for the amount of championships he's won in the past, but also the class he shows on and off the court. In a time where people like Terrell Owens are often on SportsCenter for reasons I don't understand, it's great to have someone like Roger that always knows the right things to say/do.

That being said, I don't think Roger is the GOAT. One of the top 3-4? Definitely!! Absolutely no doubt about that. Do I think he would beat Sampras in both of their prime? I think he would own Sampras like he owns Roddick.

The problem is there is a guy named Rafa Nadal who in my opinion will go down as the #1 player I've ever watched wield a tennis racket. And the surprising thing is that his skills on the court are not the main reason he wins. The head on his shoulders and the people around him are the MAIN reason for his success.

The reason Sampras and Bjorn were not dominated by another player in their era is because Rafa Nadal and Roger Federer weren't in their era. The level these two men play at is INCREDIBLE.

Just my two cents.

How many major titles does Nadal have and can he come close to Federer?

Federer has won so many majors that he was in line to surpass Pete Samprass. I was wondering if Nadal was anywhere near to Federers accomplishments.

Answer: Well, Nadal has 6 grandslam titles. It is possible that Nadal can one day get as close to the major titles that Federer currently have because Nadal is young. He's just 22 and as long as he stays healthy even if he has knee tendinitis, as I say again, that he can reach Federer's record as the years progress while Roger is getting old and trying to surpass Sampras's record of 14.

What are the chances of Roger Federer losing his 1st place ranking in the french open?

I want to know if it is possible for Federer to lose his 1st place, what is the worst case scenario?

Answer: He's not going to lose his No. 1 rank even if he lost in the first round of Roland Garros. That is because he is 1090 points ahead of the current No. 2 Rafael Nadal. The maximum number of points that could be deducted from Federer's ranking points are 700. While the maximum number of points that could be earned by Nadal is 0 since he won it last year. So there won't be much change in the top three unless Nadal is unable to defend his title.

Breaking It Down: Federer vs. Hanescu - NYTimes.com

Roger Federer, now one match closer to Wimbledon history, used forehand winners and serves up the middle to dominate his first-round match.

How can Federer be so good without hitting the ball hard?

I have seen amateurs that hit way harder than federer and are rather consistent. I dont know how he does it. I think its his wide serve or something or maybe the angles he can hit.

Answer: I think Federer's strength comes from his excellent anticipation of his opponent's shot. This allows him more time to get into a strong position to make the return. He also has an instinct of the best place to place his shot and which shot he needs to make to get the ball there.

Also, tennis players have lots of different service shots and they all require different set-up which can be read by the opponent so they know where the serve is going before the ball leaves the racquet. All of Federer's serves look the same, so an opponent will only know where his serve is going until after the shot is made, meaning they have less time to return it.

How would the Sport of Tennis be without Federer and Nadal?

Federer and Nadal. What they contribute to tennis is amazing and without these two players, tennis would have no emotion at all (no major rivalry)
AND
Where do you think the Federer and Nadal rivalry ranks in tennis?
Where would it rank alltime in all sports?

Answer: If Federer or Nadal weren't around, there would be other exciting players occupying their positions. Perhaps, Roddick, Hewitt, Murray, Bagdaitis, would have profited with Federer not hanging around at number one for so long.

It's the same situation in golf. With Tiger Woods gone, the opportunity is there for other players to shine.

I think that Federer/Nadal is one of the greatest rivalry in tennis. I really liked the Borg/McEnroe rivalry, though. The serve and volley/baseliner contrast really made this rivalry something special.
