Then walk north on Martin Luther King Boulevard to All Books (410 Broad Street, 423-266-0501), a used-book store where you can browse rare tomes about Chattanooga. In the Ocean Journey building, strategically placed white rocking chairs let you take a break and watch the world go by outside. 7 p.m. 8) BEYOND GRITS New York has wandered down to Tennessee -- specifically, to St. Johns Restaurant (1234 Market Street, 423-266-4400), an upscale spot with a chef from the Gramercy Tavern in Manhattan, a knowledgeable but unobtrusive serving staff and fresh seafood flown in from all over. You can order ranch antelope with a cantaloupe chutney and stone-ground grits ($30), Hawaiian monchong fish ($25), seared Alaskan ivory salmon ($24) or strawberry pie ($8). It can be a bit quiet at St. Johns, so if its boisterous you want, go to the recently opened, buzz-worthy Blue Water Grille (224 Broad Street, 423-266-4200), with its lurid, Shaq-sized paintings of marlin and grouper and its fresh seafood from Florida (lump crab cakes, $10; lobster tacos, $10; jerk swordfish, $19). 9 p.m. 9) FROM ROADHOUSE TO RAVE With its wide-open, roadhouse feel, the most popular party venue in Chattanooga is Rhythm & Brews (221 Market Street, 423-267-4644; www.rhythm-brews.com; $12 to $15), where bands play bluegrass, blues, folk rock and other rocking regional styles. Go light on the $4.25 mixed drinks: the bartender makes them strong. The kids can play engineer on a life-size (though, sadly, nonworking) model of the original Chattanooga Choo Choo steam locomotive. Take a ride on a creaky New Orleans trolley that rolls through a 25-minute tour of the 24 acres of train yards and hotel buildings ($2). Afterward, marvel at the Model Railroad Museums elaborate display. They throw in free Wi-Fi access and a Continental breakfast with pseudo-bagels and blueberry muffins. If you indulge in the indoor pool, whirlpool and spa, though, you may never get to see the sights.
