In Savior, Dennis Quaid has the role of his career as a hard-bitten American mercenary fighting for the Serbian side in the Bosnian war. The actors familiar rakish smile has faded into the hollow-eyed gaze of a weather-beaten soldier who long ago discarded his humanity in the muck of some forgotten battlefield. Although the movie, directed by Peter Antonijevic, a Serbian filmmaker, is set in the former Yugoslavia, it has no interest in exploring the history of conflict in the Balkans, and it refuses to take sides, or even to name sides. As Mr. Quaids character, Guy, perilously makes his way through the war-torn countryside, the film portrays a land whose people, regardless of ethnicity, have been reduced to animalistic survival tactics by the violence that has devastated the region. Bone isnt a word that often turns up in movie titles. As used by the writer and director Steve Kloves in Flesh and Bone, it suggests something tough, ominous and strikingly deliberate, qualities that perfectly capture the mood of Mr. Klovess transfixing second feature. Although this films story and setting locate it light-years away from The Fabulous Baker Boys, his earlier romance steeped in world-weary diffidence and late-night glamour, these two films have a lot in common. They share the sharp stylistic imprint of a young film maker who is no longer merely going places. He has arrived. Mr. Kloves happens to make films -- he also wrote Racing With the Moon (1984) -- but he thinks like a novelist. He creates original stories out of whole cloth, with a novelists ability to interweave narrative threads, sustain haunting symmetries and look deep into his characters hearts. That aspect of his talent is especially clear in Flesh and Bone, which doesnt match the sultriness of The Fabulous Baker Boys but tells a much more ambitious story.
