Zingy, a company that sells entertainment for cellular phones, said yesterday that it had signed exclusive deals to deliver voice recordings from the rap star Kanye West and songs from the R&B star Aaliyah, who died in a 2001 plane crash. The company said Mr. West, whose debut album, The College Dropout, ranked as one of last years biggest sellers, would provide screensavers, wallpaper, voicemail greetings and voice ring tones. The Federal Aviation Administration said today that the pilot of a plane that crashed in the Bahamas on Saturday, killing the singer Aaliyah and eight others, was not authorized to fly the craft and that the agency was investigating why he was at the controls. If Anne Rice was upset over the film adaptation of her Interview With the Vampire a few years back, then she probably already has Johnnie Cochran preparing legal briefs over Queen of the Damned, the latest movie version of one of her books. The message of this florid and dull Queen, about the lonely ways of the undead, boils down to this: Just Say No to Blood. It turns out that this time around, Lestat, the thinking mans vampire, is depressed because he misses being a mortal, that same adolescent existential crisis that Louis (Brad Pitt), a secondary bloodsucker, suffered through in the earlier Interview With a Vampire. Lestat -- who in this incarnation has morphed from Tom Cruise (Interview) to Stuart Townsend -- is now a pop star. He saunters about the stage in skin-tight outfits that are probably supposed to send a menacing shiver but look more like ensembles from a road production of Chicago.. AALIYAHS career started and ended with people talking about her age. In 1994, when she was 15, she released her first album, Age Aint Nothing but a Number, which sold a million copies. She didnt sing like a little girl -- even then, she had a stronger voice and a more sophisticated approach than most pop singers -- and she didnt act like one, either: the child star was reported to be a child bride, secretly married to her mentor, the R & B crooner R. Kelly. (Neither ever confirmed the marriage.) A week ago Saturday, when her airplane crashed in the Bahamas, killing her and eight other passengers, people were talking about Aaliyahs age again. She was only 22, but she had recorded some of the most innovative and influential pop songs of the last five years. Aaliyahs second album, in 1996, was called One in a Million, and it teamed her with the producer Timbaland; his computer-programmed beats fitted perfectly with her cool, breathy voice to create a new kind of electronic music. She sang songs about love, to be sure, but she often sounded as if she were extolling the mathematical perfection of Timbalands music machines.
