POLICY AND THE ECONOMY
Following is a transcript of the address by the President to the nation from Washington last night, as recorded by The New York Times: My fellow Americans, in recent days all of us have been swamped by a sea of economic statistics, some good, some bad, and some just plain confusing. There are times when I think that the paper traffic that crosses my desk in a week could fill a big city phone book, and then some. The value of the dollar is up around the world. Interest rates are down by 40 percent. The stock and bond markets surge upward. Inflation is down 59 percent. Buying power is going up. Some economic indicators are down. Others are up. But the dark cloud of unemployment hangs over the lives of 11 million of our friends, neighbors and family. At times, the sheer weight of all these facts and figures makes them hard for anyone to understand. What do they really mean, and what can we do to make them better?

Her speech was the highest profile public appearance to date by an immigrant from that movement, and it was a measure of how young people have emerged from the shadows despite their illegal status.. Sheen of the King Legacy Dims On New, More Profitable Path
For more than 25 years after the assassination of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., his widow and four children were Atlantas royalty. World leaders made pilgrimages to the Martin Luther King Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change on Auburn Avenue here to pay tribute. Presidential candidates begged for an audience, preferably with a photo opportunity. A reverential press dutifully reported official pronouncements and rarely, if ever, criticized.. Special report, A Different Dream, finds legacy of slain civil rights leader, Dr Martin Luther King Jr, has lost much of imperial sheen as family prepares to transform it into financial empire by taking most public role in years, namely, mission to prove innocence of his convicted killer, James Earl Ray; King family is is now routinely and openly derided, both in Atlanta, where it was once revered, and among civil rights figures; change in status parallels stark generational shift in familys leadership from 70-year-old widow, Coretta Scott King, to 36-year-old son, Dexter Scott King; since succeeding mother as head of Martin Luther King Center for Nonviolent Social Change and executor of fathers estate, he has quickly consolidated control over familys social agenda and financial affairs; with halting, often awkward, steps, he has culled together vision for preserving fathers legacy that relies more on Internet and intellectual property rights than on cause-oriented mission mother established for King Center in 1968; transition has, in many ways, highlighted generational differences, in both substance and style, between marchers and dreamers of civil rights era and deal makers and realists of present; photos (L)

A Papa In His 60s, Dreamin Of the 60s
As Christopher Guest has just demonstrated in his new film, A Mighty Wind, the reverence and nostalgia of middle-aged baby boomers for the music of the 1960s have achieved lampoonable dimensions. And now onstage we have the very proof of the pudding, a reverential and nostalgic look at the music of the 60s that is entirely oblivious to its own sanctimony. This is Dream a Little Dream, a show that opened last night at the Village Theater (the erstwhile Village Gate) and that is billing itself as the Mamas and the Papas musical, a paean to the quartet that epitomized the adult-tolerated, folk-rock branch of the efflorescent pop music scene of the psychedelic era. More accurately, however, the show is a baldly self-centered memoir by a former Papa, Denny Doherty..
