FIFTY years ago, last Tuesday, dawn broke with flaming face on Fall River, Mass. The sun did not slip slowly through the venerable oaks and elms to work itself, and the town, to sweltering August heat. It smote suddenly and fiercely, blocked the faded brick and frame dwellings in hot light and deep shadow, while the birds feebly protested in the thick foliage.. Case discussed; illus

The Opera That Takes an Ax To Strict Definitions of Style
THE composer Jack Beeson concedes that in the context of American contemporary music, his opera Lizzie Borden, which had its premiere at the New York City Opera in 1965, is probably considered musically conservative. Based on accounts of a horrific ax murder that took place in Fall River, Mass., in 1892 and was soon steeped in legend (Lizzie Borden took an ax, and gave her father 40 whacks, goes the familiar childrens chant), the opera has generally been praised as gripping theater. But despite its angst and dissonance, the score is tonally grounded, often hews to recognizable keys, has stretches of sweet lyricism and set-piece arias, and even incorporates a likeness of a Protestant hymn tune and a pastiche of a Victorian parlor song. By the standards of what was mostly around in those days and what was mostly being written about, Mr. Beeson said recently in his Upper West Side apartment, Lizzie Borden was, like all my operas, I suppose, conservative, whatever that term means.. Revenge in Mind and Ax in Hand, Lizzie Bordens Back
For 22 years Glimmerglass Opera, nestled idyllically near Otsego Lake in the northern Catskills, has mostly lived up to its mission: to present summer seasons of new or seldom-heard works not from a sense of duty but with a sense of adventure, and to present familiar works in innovative productions. This weekends gala festival was no exception. Receiving its first production in 20 years, Jack Beesons gripping Lizzie Borden was performed on Friday night. The next night was given to Mozarts overlooked early opera buffa, La Finta Giardiniera. After these two engrossing evenings, Don Pasquale on Sunday afternoon seemed especially light. But an engaging cast conducted by Joseph Rescigno and directed by Leon Major put a fresh spin on this Donizetti favorite.

LIZZIE BORDEN TOOK AN AX
Mary Cantwells article on the Lizzie Borden case overlooks a tantalizing detail. In an illustration containing headlines of original newspaper accounts of the double murder, a subhead reads: No Clue to Their Assailant. But a Portuguese Who Has Been in Mr. Bordens Employ Suspected of the Crime. Who was this original suspect? Was this an early example of Fall River nativism, or did reasonable evidence exist of another suspect? Was there a cover-up? Could there have been a conspiracy? Was there a second ax man?

Deeper Look Into the Tale Of a Daughter And an Ax
Murder exerts a peculiar hold on the American imagination, and murder that appears to have been got away with is particularly potent. The O. J. Simpson trial and perennial interest in conspiracy theories about the assassination of President John F. Kennedy are modern manifestations of this fascination, and anyone who thinks they will fade into the pages of history books might consider the fate of Lizzie Borden, still infamous as the ax murderer of her father and stepmother more than a century after she was acquitted of the 1892 double murder. Her story has been regularly revived as a subject for books, plays and television movies, as well as a ballet, Agnes de Milles 1954 Fall River Legend, with music by Morton Gould. But if theres one art form in which murderous psychopaths really shine, its opera; the surprising thing is that it wasnt until 1965 that this story made its operatic debut. That year the New York City Opera gave the premiere of Jack Beesons Lizzie Borden, and on Saturday evening the company revisited it in a new staging, a co-production with the Glimmerglass Opera that was and first seen there in 1996.. LIZZIE BORDEN TOOK AN AX
I enjoyed Mary Cantwells article on Lizzie Borden (Lizzie Borden Took an Ax, July 26). If I offer some comments, it is because I have a vested interest. I did a good deal of the original research for Jack Beesons opera Lizzie Borden, which was first presented at the New York City Opera in 1965. You dont need conjectures about motive like those promoted by Professor Ryckebusch in your article. Some time before the slaughter, Papa Borden had transferred two houses owned by his daughters to their stepmother, Abby. He also stubbornly refused to allow Lizzie the money she needed for the annual meeting of the Christian Temperance Union. He bestowed silly trifles on Abby, while the girls had to eat warmed-up mutton soup for breakfast. Enough reason to do away with anybody!

Sleeping, Fitfully, Where Lizzie Did
IT might have been the photographs of the skulls. Or the yellowed tag reading Mr. Bordens stomach. Or the red gobs on the tag that turned out to be sealing wax, not blood after all. Whatever it was, I was about to faint and I hadnt even set foot inside the newly opened Lizzie Borden Bed and Breakfast Museum yet. In fact, I was still at the nearby Fall River Historical Society, standing between the blood-spotted bedspread from the room where Abby Borden had been murdered, and those skulls. Or what was left of them.. Lizzie Borden Took an Ax
TODAY THE narrow clapboard house is painted pale gray trimmed with deep green. A small print shop is shoved into one side of it, and a big air-conditioner pokes incongruously from a parlor window. I know it is a parlor window because, like a lot of people who grew up near Fall River, Mass., I am conversant with the floor plan of this house. It is a house with no corridors and rooms that open awkwardly off one another. Because its former residents were much given to locking their bedroom doors, half the rooms on the second floor were once accessible only by the front staircase. The other half were accessible only by the back staircase. The maid slept in the attic; there were no bathtubs, and the water closet in the basement was seldom visited. It was easier to empty the morning slop pails in the backyard.

PUBLIC LIVES
When the Stars Are the Audience Backstage at the opening performance of Lizzie Boren, the New York City Operas revival of Jack Beesons 34-year-old atonal work, the whispering was not about the century-old ax murderer but about who had two aisle seats somewhere in the New York State Theater at Lincoln Center. The word kept filtering back, WOODY ALLENS out there, said the soprano LAUREN FLANIGAN, who sang the part of Lizzies mother, Abigail. So all the other actors kept preparing for close-ups. The hair kept getting slicked back further and further, and they kept edging closer and closer to the footlights. Review/Film; Trying to Set a Trap For a Serial Rapist
The realm of the exploitation thriller is not normally the province of feminist film makers, but in Love Crimes Lizzie Borden attempts some subversive inroads. She tells the story of David Hanover (Patrick Bergin), a sex offender masquerading as a famous fashion photographer, and of the efforts of an Atlanta assistant district attorney named Dana Greenway (Sean Young) to catch him at his own game. Ordinarily this might mean a little routine voyeurism and a lot of lurid cat-and-mousing. But Ms. Borden, director of the militant 1983 Born in Flames and the more effective 1987 Working Girls, tries to frame this seemingly conventional thriller in more thoughtful ways. Its unusual, when the prosecutor finally confronts the criminal, to find her asking him Why do you hate women? Its also unusual to find a female character asking Do you always have to be so patronizing? while discussing the case in bed with her boss.
