The surge of a crowd watching a rock concert has left three teen-agers dead, the authorities said. Lieut. Marty Vuyk of the Salt Lake City Police said the three teen-agers apparently fell to the floor and were then stepped on or crushed by the weight of other concertgoers during a performance by the heavy-metal group AC/DC at the Salt Palace on Friday night. The accident occurred as the show opened and the crowd surged toward the stage. One of the victims, Jimmy Boyd, 14 years old, of Salt Lake City, was pronounced dead Friday night of compression asphyxiation, according to a preliminary finding by the state medical examiners office. A second teen-ager, Curtis Child, 14, of Logan, died Sunday at Holy Cross Hospital, and the third, Elizabeth Glausi, 19, of Provo, died today at the hospital when life support equipment was shut off at her familys request, officials at Holy Cross said. Results of autopsies on the second and third teen-agers to die were not available. All tickets for the concert were sold at the same price, and fans chose seats on a first come, first served basis. Spectacor Management Group, which operates the Salt Palace, said in a statement on Saturday that attendance at the AC/DC concert, 13,294, was below the buildings capacity of 13,920 and that crowd-control measures had been adequate.

That purpose was to play loud. A big beat, a blues-rock guitar lick, a simple chorus and a leer: what more does rock need? Not much, if the band performing it is AC/DC. Formed in Sydney, Australia, in 1973 and a regular presence in the American Top 10 since 1979, AC/DC is a homage to perpetual adolescence; over two decades, it has barely changed its music, its message or its antics onstage. On Sunday night, at the Continental Arena in East Rutherford, N.J., fans showed up to enjoy a sure thing. They count on AC/DC for songs about sex, rowdiness and damnation, with unsubtle titles like Hard as a Rock, Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap and Hells Bells, all repeated dozens of times as choruses. Brian Johnson sings in a falsetto screech, like a boy stuck on the verge of puberty, and he works the stage in constant self-congratulation: licking his lips, winking, shaking his shoulders, pointing fingers.

AC/DC: LET THERE BE ROCK, which opened a one-week engagement last Friday at the Ziegfeld Theater, is a dull, cheaply made concert film that should appeal only to diehard fans of the hugely popular Australian rock quintet. About three-quarters of the movie is taken up with concert footage filmed in France two years ago. Crudely spliced in are scenes of the group loafing and snippets from an interview in which an off-screen voice asks questions such as Are you waiting for the Third World War? and What do you think of soccer? Their responses are almost invariably so garbled - apparently by drunkenness - as to be virtually unintelligible.
