Four Roads to Detroit, None of Them Easy
A preview of each first-round game and predictions for upsets, the Final Four and the champion. ( indicates an upset chance.) (Go to Mens Bracket) EAST VILLANOVAS EARLY PATH IS CLEAR Look for Villanova to push Big East rival Pittsburgh. Duke should end its string of not reaching the Round of 16, helped by a home-crowd advantage in Greensboro, N.C. But if the Blue Devils end up playing Pitt, theyll get smashed, exploited by a lack of interior strength. Keep an eye on V.C.U., which has two future N.B.A. players. UPSET SPECIALScott K. Brown/Associated Press V.C.U. had been erratic all season but blitzed George Mason in the C.A.A. title game. Eric Maynor, pictured, a potential first-round N.B.A. draft pick, beat Duke with a jumper in the first round two years ago. Watch out for Larry Sanders, a 6-foot-10 condor in the mold of Keon Clark. No. 1 Pittsburgh vs. No. 16 East Tennessee State The Panthers shouldnt be seriously challenged until they reach Boston. No. 8 Oklahoma State vs. No. 9 Tennessee Theyre bonded by a primary color, orange, and generally uninspiring seasons. Pick the Vols, but dont watch. No. 5 Florida State vs. No. 12 Wisconsin The Seminoles will roll, the way their football team did against the Badgers in the Capital One Bowl. No. 4 Xavier vs. No. 13 Portland State For the Musketeers, a bad travel game (Boise) but a great matchup. The Vikings are seeded too high. No. 6 U.C.L.A. vs. No. 11 Virginia Commonwealth The Bruins have to fly across the country and then face a veteran team. Look for V.C.U. to win an ugly game. No. 3 Villanova vs. No. 14 American How was Villanova put in Philadelphia? This game is a red carpet to the next round. Nova will cruise to the Round of 16. No. 7 Texas vs. No. 10 Minnesota This is a lock for the Longhorns, who are much more talented. Look for the Big Ten to have a lousy tournament. No. 2 Duke vs. No. 15 Binghamton This will be close. Binghamton has elite athletes but not the size to exploit Dukes soft interior. SOUTH TOUGHEST ROUTE OF ALL This is the strongest region by a wide margin. It has star power with Blake Griffin of Oklahoma and Tyler Hansbrough of North Carolina and a hot team in Syracuse. Gonzagas Austin Daye is a major N.B.A. prospect. And never count out Michigan Coach John Beilein. UPSET SPECIALDanny Johnston/Associated Press This is almost too easy. Illinois is over-seeded and its star guard, Chester Frazier, is hurt. Western Kentucky already beat Louisville this year and the combo guard A. J. Slaughter will emerge as a March hero. Steffphon Pettigrew, pictured, will also contribute. No. 1 North Carolina vs. No. 16 Radford Radford is the best of the No. 16 seeds, but that just makes it a slightly bigger speed bump. No. 8 L.S.U. vs. No. 9 Butler How bad is the SEC this year? Its regular-season champion is a No. 8 seed. Yikes. Go with L.S.U. in the toughest game to pick. No. 5 Illinois vs. No. 12 Western Kentucky Look for Big Red, W.K.U.s mascot, to dance again. The Illini just arent that good. No. 4 Gonzaga vs. No. 13 Akron Tough draw for Akron to be shipped to Portland. Expect the Zags to have a distinct home-court advantage. No. 6 Arizona State vs. No. 11 Temple James Harden is one of the few elite talents in this tournament. Temple might have left its legs in Atlantic City. No. 3 Syracuse vs. No. 14 Stephen F. Austin If Syracuses legs are tired after working overtime after overtime in New York, they wont be tested here. No. 7 Clemson vs. No. 10 Michigan Reeling Clemson gets a nightmare draw. John Beilein is the hardest coach in the country to prepare to play. No. 2 Oklahoma vs. No. 15 Morgan State Todd Bozeman, banished for cheating at California, would need his old recruit Jason Kidd to win here. MIDWEST LOUISVILLES TO LOSE Looks like a cakewalk to Detroit for Louisville. Michigan State is a weak No. 2. The biggest test will probably come from Wake Forest, which is as talented as any team in the country. The difference: Louisville is filled with tested veterans, and Wake has erratic and inexperienced players. Defending champion Kansas has a bad draw. UPSET SPECIALHarry How/Getty Images On the basis of talent, Southern California is miles ahead of Boston College. DeMar DeRozan, pictured, scored 25 points in the Pac-10 title game and finally appears to be living up to his hype. Boston College is seeded way too high, too. No. 1 Louisville vs. No. 16 Alabama State/Morehead State This one will be a laugher, but playing Ohio State next in Dayton is no fun. No. 8 Ohio State vs. No. 9 Siena The Saints are better, and their N.C.A.A. experience last year will help. But did Sienas season earn it too high a seed? No. 5 Utah vs. No. 12 Arizona No team has played worse in the N.C.A.A. tournament than Arizona the last two years. Look for another stinker. No. 4 Wake Forest vs. No. 13 Cleveland St. The Vikings waited a generation to return to the N.C.A.A.s and got a bad matchup. Wake, the best No. 4, should roll. No. 6 West Virginia vs. No. 11 Dayton The Flyers are strong and deep, but West Virginia is always tough. Look for the defensive-minded Mountaineers to win. No. 3 Kansas vs. No. 14 North Dakota State This is a road game for the Jayhawks, with Fargo 3 1/2 hours from Minneapolis. Kansas will win a close one. No. 7 Boston College vs. No. 10 U.S.C. These are two of the more puzzling and erratic teams. U.S.C. will win when its play finally mirrors its talent. No. 2 Michigan State vs. No. 15 Robert Morris Robert Morris is scrappy and athletic, but its tough to write off Spartans Coach Tom Izzo. Especially this early. WEST ROAD GOES THROUGH UCONN Connecticut has to go out West, but it will have little competition out there. A UConn matchup with Memphis would be fun because Jim Calhoun and John Calipari dont like each other. Washington gets a favorable draw in Portland, Ore. If theres one tournament constant, its this: Wild things happen in Boise. So watch out, Marquette and Missouri. UPSET SPECIALTami Chappell/Reuters No matchup epitomizes the mediocre nature of this N.C.A.A. tournament more than Maryland versus Cal. Each is well coached but not particularly talented. Look for Maryland to win an ugly game that no one should go out of their way to watch. Greivis Vasquez, pictured, leads the Terrapins. No. 1 Connecticut vs. No. 16 Chattanooga The Mocs should be happy to be here. But they wont be hanging around long; Connecticut will overwhelm them. No. 8 Brigham Young vs. No. 9 Texas A&M The Aggies are one of the most baffling seeds (the Big 12 was down this year). Look for B.Y.U. in a blowout. No. 5 Purdue vs. No. 12 Northern Iowa A great matchup for Purdue. The Missouri Valley Conference was down this year, and the Boilermakers are peaking. No. 4 Washington vs. No. 13 Mississippi State A pro-Huskies crowd in Portland and Mississippi States tough travel schedule make this an easy pick. No. 6 Marquette vs. No. 11 Utah State Dont fall for it. This will be an upset pick because of Dominic Jamess injury. But Utah State has no quality wins. No. 3 Missouri vs. No. 14 Cornell This one should be fun; both teams can score. The Big Red should be able to keep up,but wont be able to win. No. 7 California vs. No. 10 Maryland Cals seed is puzzling. Take Maryland on the basis that average A.C.C. teams are better than average Pac-10 teams. No. 2 Memphis vs. No. 15 Cal State Northridge The Tigers have a big talent drop-off from last year but can still overwhelm with defense and athleticism. DETROIT NATIONAL SEMIFINALS The talent drop-off past the No. 3 seeds is significant. Look for Louisville, Connecticut, Villanova and North Carolina to advance, and Louisville and North Carolina to reach the championship game. CHAMPIONSHIP GAME Louisville was the best team in the best conference. Its depth and movable parts make it the best choice.
Michigan State Spartans vs. Duke Blue Devils Matchup to Watch: Can Branden.
The Okafor/Winslow combination is going to be the toughest defensive challenge for Michigan State, even as Quinn Cook and Tyus Jones threaten to score from the perimeter. It will be interesting to see how Spartan big men Matt Costello and Gavin.
N.C.A.A. Selection Day | Analyzing the Mens Bracket
Predicted winners in capital letters. *Denotes game is an upset. ALBUQUERQUE This will definitely be the wild, wild West. Look for numerous upsets in this regional, which has a weak No. 1 seeding in Washington and a solid crew of middle-seeded teams. Look for No. 2 Wake Forest to advance to the regional final and play Georgia Tech. Washington may not even make it to Albuquerque; Pitt could bully the Huskies in the second round. Ultimately, Wakes balance and depth will carry it to St. Louis. STRONG IN THE MIDDLE No. 1 WASHINGTON vs. No. 16 Montana -- The Grizzlies at least have a short trip home to Boise. No. 8 Pacific vs. No. 9 PITTSBURGH -- Pitt will win a low-scoring slugfest between similar teams. No. 5 GEORGIA TECH vs. No. 12 George Washington -- Bad matchup for the upset-minded Colonials. No. 4 Louisville vs. No. 13 LA. LAFAYETTE -- Look for Rick Pitino to go in another first-round upset. No. 6 Texas Tech vs. No. 11 U.C.L.A. -- Watch for flying chairs, and for hot Tech to be cooled off. No. 3 GONZAGA vs. No. 14 Winthrop -- Gonzaga should roll to the Round of 16. No. 7 WEST VIRGINIA vs. No. 10 Creighton -- W.V.U.s shooting will carry it in a battle of hot teams. No. 2 WAKE FOREST vs. No. 15 Chattanooga -- The Mocs will wish Chris Paul were still suspended. AUSTIN This is a tricky region to pick. No. 1 Duke isnt as talented as in past years. No. 2 Kentuckys shaky recent play is a harbinger for an early exit. No. 3 Oklahoma is talented but inexperienced. No. 4 Syracuse is a hot team that faces two tough early matchups. Ultimately, it is hard to pick against Duke. Two home games in Charlotte make it a much easier road, and J.J. Redick has proved he can carry a team. FEW SURPRISES No. 1 DUKE vs. No. 16 Delaware State -- Blue Devils should get a chance to rest J.J. Redick. No. 8 STANFORD vs. No. 9 Mississippi State -- Stanford will win the honor of being bashed by Duke. No. 5 MICHIGAN ST. vs. No. 12 Old Dominion -- Spartans will avoid another first-round upset, barely. No. 4 SYRACUSE vs. No. 13 Vermont -- Tom Brennans last call will ruin his St. Patricks Day. No. 6 Utah vs. No. 11 TEXAS-EL PASO -- Gritty Miners will outmuscle Andrew Bogut. No. 3 OKLAHOMA vs. No. 14 Niagara -- Sooners defense holds on in a classic clash of styles. No. 7 CINCINNATI vs. No. 10 Iowa -- Bearcats will outmuscle the depleted Hawkeyes. No. 2 KENTUCKY vs. No. 15 Eastern Kentucky -- Great story lines. Bad game. Kentucky will roll. SYRACUSE This is the most top-heavy bracket, with North Carolina, UConn and Kansas the top three. But all have questions. North Carolina needs to integrate Rashad McCants into the lineup. UConn played poorly in the Big East tournament. Kansas has struggled to stay healthy. Ultimately, its hard to trust the Tar Heels, with their shaky chemistry and Roy Williamss history in the N.C.A.A. tournament. Look for UConn to advance. HEAVY AT THE TOP No. 1 NORTH CAROLINA vs. No. 16 Alabama A&M -- Even the mercurial Heels cant mess this one up. No. 8 Minnesota vs. No. 9 IOWA STATE -- Cyclones talented backcourt will slice up Gophers. No. 5 VILLANOVA vs. No. 12 New Mexico -- Lobos are hot, but the Wildcats are too talented. No. 4 FLORIDA vs. No. 13 Ohio -- Billy Donovan and the Gators will delay their annual early exit. No. 6 WISCONSIN vs. No. 11 Northern Iowa -- Badgers swing offense will befuddle Panthers. No. 3 KANSAS vs. No. 14 Bucknell -- Bisons beat Pitt this season, but Kansas is too tough. No. 7 Charlotte vs. No. 10 N.C. STATE -- Wolfpack holds on and Herb Sendek saves his job. Again. No. 2 CONNECTICUT vs. No. 15 Central Florida -- Cranky Jim Calhoun will have his team ready. CHICAGO Its just too hard not to pick Illinois to win this region. Remember what the home-court advantage did for Syracuse during the second weekend of the tournament in its run to the title in 2003? Elsewhere, look for Utah State to dump Arizona in the first round, paving Oklahoma States road to the regional final. The Illini and the Cowboys should meet in the regional final in Chicago. Dont overlook L.S.U. WHY GO AGAINST NO. 1? No. 1 ILLINOIS vs. No. 16 Fairleigh Dickinson -- The New York areas only entrant has little hope. No. 8 Texas vs. No. 9 NEVADA -- Nevada wins what could be the best first-round game. No. 5 Alabama vs. No. 12 WIS.-MILWAUKEE -- Bama will lose and turn attention to spring football. No. 4 BOSTON COLL. vs. No. 13 Pennsylvania -- Dont be tempted by the Quakers. Eagles win big. No. 6 L.S.U. vs. No. 11 Alabama-Birmingham -- L.S.U. wins a battle of size versus quickness. No. 3 Arizona vs. No. 14 UTAH STATE -- Utah States toughness will spark the biggest upset. No. 7 SOUTHERN ILLINOIS vs. No. 10 St. Marys -- Salukis will prevail in a well-played game. No. 2 OKLAHOMA STATE vs. No. 15 Southeastern Louisiana -- This game will get ugly quickly. ST. LOUIS READY FOR A REMATCH If this Final Four plays out, it will be a high-wattage affair in St. Louis. Illinois will have the edge in its game with Wake Forest. The Illini blitzed the Demon Deacons, 91-73, when the teams met on Dec. 1 in Champaign. Illinois will have a distinct home-court advantage in St. Louis, all the more so because it will not face the travel wear and tear of Wake, which must go through Albuquerque. In a rematch from last season, expect Connecticut to top Duke again in the other semifinal. Connecticuts frontcourt will again overpower Duke. ILLINIS CHARMED RUN In the title game, Illinois will close its charmed season with a close victory over Connecticut. The perimeter-oriented Illini should be able to run on the Huskies. Though thin on the frontline, Illinois has enough big bodies to bring off the bench and not let UConn overpower them. The point guard matchup of Dee Brown and Marcus Williams will be a classic. But look for the Illini to hound Williams and get just enough out of James Augustine inside to hold on for the victory.. Duke Blue Devils advance to 2015 national championship.
The Duke Blue Devils will be one of two teams playing for the national championship on Monday night thanks to an 81-61 victory over Michigan State on Saturday.. He also continued his dominance over Michigan State and head coach Tom Izzo, improving his record against the Spartans under Izzo to a sparkling 9-1.. If Okafor is limited on Monday or forced to spend a significant chunk of time on the bench for any reason, then Duke could wind up in trouble.
