No Piano-Slamming But Still Intimidating
Jerry Lee Lewis, looking like a lawyer in his dark suit and vest, glowering without blinking through thick, buglike glasses, was using one of his old tricks to intimidate the audience at Tramps on Friday night. Not any of the exciting ones -- setting a piano on fire, jumping on top of it or using it to create a discernible musical excitement -- but something far more subtle. During his 1 A.M. set, he played with undisguised indifference. He opened with Roll Over, Beethoven, and quit in the middle. Trouble in Mind was next, and after the refrain he started to improvise a verse -- something about thank God for the breath Im breathing -- then snapped it off. Enough of that, he proclaimed. And so on. Most songs were abandoned after two choruses and a piano solo, left there like half-eaten sandwiches. This wasnt some kind of medley. This is only the second living flavor, as we call it, named after a living human being, said Lee Holden, a spokesman for Ben & Jerrys, which created Cherry Garcia in 1987 in honor of Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead. The flavor is going to be a Brazil-nut base with caramel fudge, chocolate chunks and Rainforest Crunch tidbits, which is a Brazil and cashew nut brittle.

Jerry Bosco, left, and Ben Milligan, preservation activists and stained-glass restorers in Portland, Ore., scoured demolition sites nationwide from the 1950s to the 1980s, buying up the Victorian doors, porch posts, mantelpieces, doorknobs and roof tiles that were disappearing from the landscape.
