Ferndale: Fire at Foie Gras Producer
A fire on Tuesday killed 13,000 to 15,000 ducks at the nations largest producer of foie gras, the company said yesterday. The fire may have been caused by a short circuit in a boiler in the duck coop, said Michael Ginor, president of the company, Hudson Valley Foie Gras. But the loss of the ducks will not hurt the production of foie gras, he said. The ducks that died, female Pekins, had been set aside to breed with Muscovy males to produce the Moulard ducks that are used for foie gras. Mr. Ginor estimated the loss at more than $100,000..
